  • Laidback rural site five minutes' drive from Palas de Rei
  • A 25-minute drive from Lugo and an hour from Santiago de Compostela
  • Handy stopover for walkers on the St James's Way
A ‘house by the river’ is indeed what you’ll get if you sign up for a stay at A Casa do Río, a rural Galicia site right next to the Rego de Portacás river. And not just by the river, but also by the woods, and an easy five-minute jaunt by car (or 10-minute bus ride) to the town of Palas de Rei. As seems fitting for a secluded countryside spot, you’ll share the site with horses and a flock of geese and chickens that merrily peck their way around the place. There are some fine walks to be had in the woods around the site, and you can look forward to a shower and a cool beer from the little bar once you’ve completed your hike. A small fridge and a chest freezer are also available for guest use from time to time if you’ve got snacks you need to stash somewhere cool. Gentle local stroll not quite what you had in mind? It’s worth noting that this site is close to the St James’s Way, and therefore a handy stopping point for those tackling the epic trail (or who’d like a little taster portion). If you’re not quite up to doing the journey on foot, you can drive to Santiago de Compostela in just over an hour, or take a wander around Lugo, 25 minutes away.

Local attractions

Get your Galicia adventures going by starting close to home: taking a turn around pretty Palas de Rei (five minutes’ drive), admiring the Romanesque church in Vilar de Donas (two minutes), wandering around the medieval Pambre Castle (20 minutes) and ambling around the ancient castro in Castromaior (20 minutes). Leave plenty of time for a stroll in Lugo (25 minutes) – the ancient city dates back more than 2000 years, and is said to be the only city on the planet still entirely encircled by original Roman walls. You’ll want to do that circuit, of course – go early, as there’s not much shade, and then dive into the old town to see what’s inside (a mix of Roman, Gothic and Baroque bits around every corner, including a stunning cathedral and town hall, and some splendid places to eat). Santiago de Compostela (an hour) must be something pretty special if so many people are determined to walk there, you’d imagine… and you’d be quite right. The pilgrims mainly set off in search of the huge Romanesque cathedral, of course – it’s well worth a lengthy wander, as are the museums and the history-stuffed streets (which also house a good number of excellent seafood restaurants and wine shops…)
