  • Family-friendly campsite just over a kilometre from Hervás
  • A 25-minute drive from Plasencia; Monfragüe national park 40 minutes
  • On-site café and restaurant with outdoor seating areas; outdoor pool
Set among the hills and trees of the Ambroz valley, Camping El Pinajarro is named after the highest peak in this mountainous area. The standard of the accommodation it provides is no less lofty, combining well-maintained facilities with an excellent location in a quiet rural spot just over a kilometre from the historic town of Hervás. Everything's set up to spend time outdoors here, with barbecues, an outdoor pool with a separate kids’ paddling pool, a playground and spaces set aside for open-air games and sports. Both the café and restaurant have access to spacious terraces where you eat and drink under the stars on long summer nights (while still having access to their cool interiors to escape the sun's glare in the heat of the day). Other facilities include gas bottle sales, daily bread deliveries, a waste disposal point and recycling. Camping El Pinajarro has access to all manner of tourist hotspots and active attractions, whether you fancy hiking in the surrounding countryside in search of waterfalls, wandering around the medieval Jewish quarter of Hervás or exploring handsome historic cities like Plasencia (25 minutes' drive) or the university town of Salamanca (an hour).

Electric optional earth pitch

Liked: Location-location-location. The cafe was good and in April, May Bank, it was quiet. There is lots of natural shade. Cycling to Plataforma de Gredos was highlight. As was Las Chorreas waterfall.

Local attractions

Hervás (five minutes' drive) is full of medieval architecture, narrow streets and cosy bars where you can sample typical Extremadura produce. The Jewish quarter is particularly pretty, and there are several historic churches well worth keeping an eye out for too as you do the rounds of the town. Hervás is also the starting point for scenic hiking trails, like the one that leads up to La Chorrera waterfall or the path to the summit of El Pinajarro (not for the faint-hearted, as this very challenging route takes around 10 hours for fit hikers). More such landscapes can be found in the neighbouring Jerte Valley (around 10 kilometres away by road), or for that matter around the gorgeous Monfragüe national park (40 minutes) if you don't mind a slightly longer drive. If you're here for a bit longer, take the opportunity to visit the Arab walled town of Granadilla (25 minutes), the pretty plateresque buildings in Plasencia (25 minutes), the ancient university at Salamanca (an hour) or the well-preserved Roman ruins at Cáparra (25 minutes).
