Days of splashing in the Mediterranean, building castles on sandy beaches and lazing in the Spanish sun? If that ticks all the getaway boxes, make haste for Camping La Masía, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Catalan seaside resort Blanes. This is the start of the famed Costa Brava, so expect scenic coastal towns and villages, plenty of strolls beside turquoise seas, and infinite sandy stretches starting with the one five minutes’ walk from the site. Plus, there's sea kayaking, deep sea fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving in Blanes, and two waterparks within 20 minutes of base. There’s no need to leave the site for splashing around though – there are three pools here (and a handy poolside bar-restaurant), so cooling off after days by the sea is a cinch. That’s not the only reason to stick around either: kids will be kept entertained at the Koko Club, the family can have a bit of friendly competition with pétanque, tennis, football or beach volleyball, and there’s a spa complex with steam room, sauna, hot tub, tanning booth and massages when a bit of pampering is needed. That sounds like hungry work, so order a burger at the barbecue bar or a pizza at the snack bar, sit down for dinner in the restaurant (where they serve local produce and pour artisan wine), or sort breakfast and lunch with fresh bread and pastries from the bakery. There’s a supermarket on site too when a home-cooked meal is the only thing that’ll cut it.

Local attractions

There’s more to Blanes than beaches and watersports, so be sure to make time to wander the old seafront, clamber up to the hilltop castle and stroll through the pretty Marimurtra botanic garden (all within 15 minutes’ drive of the site) before venturing further afield. Along the coast there’s plenty to explore, and visits to Lloret de Mar (20 minutes) and Tossa de Mar (35 minutes) come highly recommended – the former for its clifftop gardens and Gnomo Park theme park, and the latter for its lighthouse and traditional fisherman’s quarter. The big coastal draw hereabouts though is Barcelona, an hour and 15 minutes away. The Catalan capital is an absolute must for its spectacular architecture, its many Gaudí masterpieces (including the famed Sagrada Familia) and its exquisite food scene. Prefer to turn inland? Head away from salt-laden air with a trip to Girona, 45 minutes away – the city has a spectacular fortified Old Town, a Gustave Eiffel-designed bridge and plenty of museums – or opt for a more nature-filled day with a jaunt into Montnegre-Corredor Natural Park, 40 minutes from base.

Liked: Nice and big camping. Good swimming pools. Good camping for people who are going to sleep very late because a lot of people got parties very late. If you are looking space for late parties is camping for you. If you want to chill and relax probably you won’t be happy enough.

Liked: De staanplaatsen hebben veel schaduw. Afgescheiden door een heg, dus genoeg privacy. Goede vlakke plaatsen. Spijkerharingen zijn wel een must! Erg fijn. Wc werden goed schoon gehouden. Mooi zwembad met genoeg plezier voor de kinderen. Bewaking op de camping hield in de nacht alles goed in de gaten, daardoor in de nacht veelal rustig. Echter krijgen de seizoensgasten wel een uitzondering. Die waren vaak nog wel lawaaierig. Als je er direct achter staat kan ik mij voorstellen dat dit als onprettig wordt ervaren . Strand is op loopafstand (10 min) boulevard van Blanes op 20 min.

Disliked: Warm water was vaak niet warm maar Lauw. Niet alle douches waren even goed.
