Direct access to the beach and spectacular coastal views? Check and check at Catalonia's Camping Caballo del Mar, a family-friendly site where the kids will likely be clamouring to settle down all summer. The site is on the Costa Maresme near Pineda de Mar, close to several clean and safe beaches for long and sunny family days, and with easy access to other popular Catalonian coast seaside spots like Malgrat and Canet de Mar. Barcelona is under an hour's drive away, via a road running parallel to the beaches. Caballo del Mar is crossed by a railway track and a coastal road. It has an outdoor pool, playground and trampolines, a hot tub, a pétanque court, a fitness room and quite a bit more: have a peaceful stroll around when you arrive to find your favourite spots. There's also a beach bar (all bars should be beach bars), and a restaurant serving tasty local food. Should you overindulge (easy), a fitness room is on site to work off any impending podge.

Local attractions

This is a gorgeous section of Catalonian coast, with plenty of beaches that are safe for kids and popular with families. The coastline also has a network of spectacularly scenic cycle routes for more family days out; bikes are available to hire from the Camping Caballo del Mar team. Several seaside resorts – and many more beaches – are along the coast too for days out, like the campsite's local settlement of Pineda de Mar, a small, scenic and colourful city between Calella and Santa Susanna; and Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Malgrat de Mar and Canet de Mar along the coast. Water World Lloret at Lloret de Mar is another good option for families, along with Marineland Catalunya, the Costa Brava waterpark with dolphinarium and marine zoo.
