General

  • Beachside site in Canet de Mar, about an hour's drive from Barcelona
  • Facilities improved every year before reopening
  • Two pools, bar terrace and restaurant serving homemade food

There's not just a fab pool (and a paddling pool) at this smashing site a short drive from Barcelona. The watery bodies of Camping Globo Barcelona in Canet de Mar are the setting for a good chunk of the lively programme of entertainment in the summer months, where you can glide along the water gracefully (or not) at an aqua gym session, take a swimming lesson, get stuck into the water games, or have a moonlight dip at one of the organised night swims. Both pools are fully lifeguarded.

Out of the water, there's so much to do too that you mightn't get to Canet de Mar's beach for a few days after arrival, even though it's right in front of the site… A full programme of no-pool activities for adults and kids runs from mid-June until mid-September; there are modern sports courts for basketball, football, tennis, ping pong and pétanque, and the site has stacks of space so you can wander off and find your own peaceful place under the trees. The flat, sandy and mighty scenic local beach is in front of the site, 100 metres away.

However. Whichever environment you pick for your on-site activities, the Globo Barcelona restaurant is a must. Set in the centre of the grounds in a 19th-century Catalan farmhouse, this is the place to sample a wide variety of Golbo Barcelona's Mediterranean menu, including pizzas and pasta, meat and fish dishes, paellas and fideuas, all homemade with local products and carefully sourced ingredients. And afterwards? A bar terrace is here too, for lazy summer evenings over a cocktail.

Organic and healthy products from a Catalan organic farm are on sale in the well-stocked shop, along with general groceries, fresh bread and croissants from the local baker, newspapers, camping gas, charcoal, and beach bits and bobs such as towels, water inflatables and sunshades.

For the essentials, there are three amenities blocks close to the camping areas; two washing-up spaces and a laundry room. The site team wants guests to have as comfy and modern facilities as possible, so invests in improving them every year before reopening for the season.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Please note, in the summer months the ground is very dry and it will be hard earth rather than grass.

Great location and well managed/maintained site. Facilities are spot on; restaurant, shop, bar, pools and entertainment area. Washrooms etc. are clean and spacious. Staff members are polite and extremely helpful.

    Disliked:

Access to the beach is not straightforward and would be limiting if you have young children in tow. That said, it does offer a degree of “privacy” as the loungers and umbrellas are reserved for camp residents. It was terribly hot the week we stayed (not something that can be controlled) but do watch out for the ants!

Extremely friendly staff and lovely Spanish feeling site. Small but provided everything we needed. Lovely pools, clean facilities and kids club. Close to train station for trips to Barcelona. About 15 mins walk along promenade. Supermarket next door. Beach is close.

    Disliked:

Restaurant is bit overpriced. No direct access to beach with little kids but not far to walk and there's a lovely beach bar.

Lovely staff, lovely place, lovely powerful hot showers, beach and great range of food shops SO CLOSE. Very nice sun terrace to buy a coffee and use the furniture!
I'm a seriously low-budget traveller, on the road long term, and restaurant dinners aren't in my budget, so I can't offer any opinions about the onsite restaurant, but it just felt like a lovely place in general.

    Disliked:

I did not like the pricing structure, but maybe it is the norm in Spain/Europe. I have previously only ever camped in my own country, Ireland. At home, as a solo hiker or solo cyclist, you pay each campsite's minimum rate, saving because you do not have a vehicle and you are only one person. In Globo Rojo, there was a per-night fee for the tent, and then for each person in the tent, one-by-one. Seems a bit mad: who'd be paying for a pitch for a tent with no people?
I TOTALLY see that it is just a short hop on the train from Barcelona, which is one of Europe's hottest destination cities, but it was, for my budget, seriously expensive. Still, a great start to a summer of camping "on the continent" with my Interrail pass. Thank you Globo Rojo people, you made me feel really chilled and welcome:)
    Note to editor:
This is my first ever review on PitchUp, I have no reason not to trust, but ...please don't cut this into snippets, or a snippet, that decontextualises anything, all or nothing, thanks! And I hate Amazon, with all my heart, so please don't put me in the draw!!

Local attractions

This lovely Catalonian site is in the small Maresme seaside resort of Canet de Mar, one of several along this part of coast between the sea and mountains.

Canet is an arty town, famed for its Catalan art nouveau architecture and its sculptures. A modernist art trail through town passes the arty highlights of Canet, stopping off at the Lluís Domènech i Montaner House-Museum, covering the life and works of the local architect.

The family-friendly beach in front of the site is flat and sandy with clear waters, and is patrolled by lifeguards during the summer. Several other beaches of all types are nearby, from fine or coarse sands to rocky expanses and big coves; for those who have a horror of returning home with tan lines, a nudist beach is 300 metres away.

Also along this spectacular part of Spanish coast, you could have a day on the fab beach of Blanes, or make it a more watery hol with some time on the waterslides and chutes of Water World in Lloret de Mar. Heading inland, the Montnegre and Corredor Natural Park, the Catalan Coastal Range and the Serralada de Marina Natural Park are all within driving distance for outdoorsy days.
