General

  • Coastal location with spectacular sea and mountain views
  • Two tennis courts, pools, pétanque court and indoor football pitch
  • A kilometre from Calella and under an hour from Barcelona and Girona

A mighty big rock and a mighty fine beach... These factoids would make Roca Grossa in the Barcelona province a mighty sensible Catalonia seaside pick just by themselves – but add in its setting a kilometre from the famed Costa del Maresme destination of Calella, and a friendly, fun-filled vibe that's had the site lauded as 'a fantastic place to take kids', and, well, you should inform the folk back home that you may be some time.

The setting is spectacular here, on the Catalonian coast between  Sant Pol de Mar and Pineda de Mar, above a beaut sandy beach, and over seven hectares of lush land between these clear waters and the mountains.

It's handy to get to too, as it's on the N-11, and a nifty base for other Catalonian coast holiday spots like Malgrat del Mar and Blanes. City days at Barcelona and Girona are under an hour's drive away (and both utter musts when you're in this part of Spain).

Barbecues are allowed on site: sort your grocery and vino shopping at the well-stocked mini market or just down the road in Calella, a destination so dedicated to shopping that it has over 500 outlets along a mammoth two-kilometre length.

The pools (one for grownups, one for kids) are well sized and surrounded by greenery with roomy sunbathing space alongside. Also among the leisurely options on offer are two tennis courts, a pétanque court, two ping pong tables and an indoor football pitch, justin case the heavens open and you have to run for cover (unlikely).

Hot water is included in the accommodation rate, as well as entertainment and activities in July and August.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/05 and 25/09 (subject to weather conditions).

This site is a fantastic place to go with the kids. The site is clean and located 2 minutes walk from a private beach with a bar and cafe.
The staff are superb, tidy, polite and always there to help. The pool is excellent for all levels of swimmer from beginner to aqua-man.
The food is brilliant and caters for even the most fussy eaters, and I include my son here, the menus are laid out in 3 different languages so a basin knowledge of Spanish cuisine is only needed but I always find it politer to get the staff to tell me the interpretation so I can ask instead of standing like a typical Brit abroad and pointing at the pictures :)).
The only downside I could find was that the site is built into the side of a hill/mountain which may make it a bit more difficult for those that have difficulties getting around.

When we arrived we were made to feel very welcome. This is a large terraced site which contains a mixture of caravan touring sites and holiday cabins. Given the steepness of the main roads in the site our caravan was quickly unhitched by staff, connected to a Land Rover Defender and it was taken to a level pitch several terraces up and sited by the staff. They offered to tow us down when we left, but that didn't prove to be necessary. At the site entrance is a small reasonably well stocked supermarket supermarket and a bar/restaurant. The site has its own access to the beach - a nice sandy beach. The site has its own large swimming pool. Because of the steepness of the site a free tractor towing a small coach is provided which runs at very regular intervals between 9.30am and 8.00pm.

    Disliked:

The site we were put on was not over large for our unit - a 7.3 metre long Bailey Unicorn Almeria. On one side we were about 2.0 metres from one van and we had about 4.00 metres on the other side to put up our sun canopy and park our car. However, the view we had over the site to the sea was excellent. On the terrace above us there were a number of holiday cabins that directly overlooked the caravans below. On the first weekend of our stay there was a very lively and loud Spanish family who wined and dined their evenings away but they did respect the midnight all quiet rule. However, in the following days several of the cabins were occupied by a group of youngsters who were typically loud throughout the day and more importantly continued to be loud at night well past midnight. This went on for several nights. To be fair when I made a complaint the management were aware of the situation and the group were made to leave two days

Local attractions

This is such a smashing slice of Spanish coast, dotted with secluded coves and sandy beaches as well as famed seaside towns such as Magrat, Tossa and Pineda del Mar. Excellent restaurants and bars are in all, but if you're too comfy in the sun to travel far, Sant Pol del Mar and Calella are both within a kilometre.

Just past Malgrat del Mar along the coast is Blanes, the fab old town with more golden sands, a famed summer fireworks display and the Mar i Murtra botanical gardens, a peaceful place with plants from around the world set against a backdrop of sea views.

From Blanes, it's a short drive to another well-known Catalonian seaside spot in Lloret del Mar, where you can whizz down the waterslides and chutes of Water World, or make pals with marine mammals and other critters at the dolphin park and zoo of Marineland Catalunya. (For a quieter vibe, climb to the clifftop gardens of Santa Clotilde.)

Barcelona is just under an hour's drive away, or about an hour and a half by bus.
