  • Peaceful family site on the banks of the Tormes river
  • Under six kilometres from the ancient city of Salamanca
  • Pools, indoor play, car wash and restaurant for guests and locals
There’s lots to like about the Castile and Leon site of Camping Don Quijote, but you might care to focus on the most important first – the restaurant here is rather special. Open to guests and locals alike – always a good sign – this stellar spot is great for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a good drink. There’s an extensive wine list, as well as a menu for kids and special dishes throughout the year… all to work through indoors or out on the renovated terrace, or to take away to have by your berth. All that, and dogs are allowed too. The setting of the site is worth a postcard home too: Camping Don Quijote is on the banks of the Tormes river, only 15 minutes’ drive from the splendid old city of Salamanca, and about 20 minutes’ walk (a kilometre and a half) from local village Cabrerizos. And on site? There are pools for grownups and tiddlers, a multigames zone for indoor play, and a soccer field for kicking a ball about. The completely overhauled amenities include separate toilets for ladies, gents and guests with reduced mobility, hot water 24 hours a day, baby bathtubs and changing tables, and a laundry area with dishwashing sinks; the site also has a car wash. And one more, most excellent, aspect of that Camping Don Quijote restaurant? Let the staff know if you’re celebrating something and they’ll make your night go with an extra zing.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Perfect base for Salamanca with an easy bike ride into the city on a reasonable well defined path. Facilities were very good and clean. There is a very popular restaurant on site which you do need to book to get into. The site shop is well stocked and reasonably priced. Very peaceful overnight.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Great location for visiting Salamanca. (Easy to cycle in on a dedicated track.) Very well organised with helpful staff with good English. There is an onsite restaurant albeit with a confusing menu.

Disliked: Probably needs a second sanitation block.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: A very popular site and very busy during our stay. Site has a really good shop, cafe and an excellent restaurant. Site also boasts a decent sized pool all set on site adjacent to the river. Facilities were excellent, clean, well maintained and with separate disabled wash room. Site is close to Salamanca, a steady walk along the river, or a bus ride from outside the site.

Disliked: The booking in process needs to be reviewed. A 45min wait in a queue, outside? Not acceptable. Sent to pitch '10'? Pitches aren't even numbered. Electric points were at a premium.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely campsite next to river with good sized pitches and good bathroom facilities. Half hour bike ride into Salamanca which was delightful. Good shop and restaurant on site and a good swimming pool. Very helpful/friendly staff.

Disliked: Quite a busy and noisy main road running alongside the site.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Great site, staff are very helpful and friendly the pitches are generous in size there are brilliant walks by the river which is a five minute walk away the bar and restaurant is well staffed who speak various languages and the food is good and reasonably priced.

Disliked: Although the reception staff are efficient, on the day we arrived there was only one person booking people in, but a 30 minute wait to get checked in??this could be improved.

Local attractions

Salamanca, of course… drive or cycle from Camping Don Quijote to this spectacular city, a university town, UNESCO World Heritage Site and former European Capital of Culture. Where to start? The Don Quijote team recommends just getting lost among the city streets; every corner, they say, is worth it, and at any time of year too. If you prefer your sightseeing time to be more itinerary-based, make first for Plaza Mayor, often called the most beautiful central plaza in the country, and stay until dark to see the baroque architecture light up. And then? Other Salamanca sightseeing options (there are many) include taking one of the four routes around the city, pottering around the Casa Lis Art Nouveau and Art Deco museum, having a look at the Escuelas Mayores courtyard at the University of Salamanca, and sampling yet more local cuisine such as chanfaina (steamed rice with pork) and hornazo meat pies – drop into the visitors’ centre in the San Millán Church for all the info you need.
