What a pretty place – and how splendidly set for old city sightseeing too. Peaceful and family-friendly Camping Fuentes Blancas in Spain's north-western community of Castile and León is a bit of a beaut: set greenly and spaciously among the Castile and León countryside but only four kilometres from the fab old city and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Burgos. You can pedal all the way to town from here – hire your wheels on site if you haven't brought your own – along the mostly flat route of the BU-800 (you should get there in under an hour along the same path if you care to amble instead). Or you could ramble off along the site's handsome tree-lined trails, or take your bucket, spade, beach towel and fishing rod to the river and sandy beach a minute or two's stroll away. Have a gander of the site pics to see the scenery you'll be settling down among when back at base: you'll probably plump for mucho time on the green and spacious terrace for post-sightseeing or post-sands sups, pausing occasionally for a plunge into the pool if you need to cool off. The team sorts entertainment for all ages if you're in a bit of a dither about what to do, with competitions, dancing and shows all on offer; there's a communal lounge for lounging indoors, and the kids have a well-equipped playground to clamber and swing around.

Liked: The local area around the site is a wonderful nature area and the walk into Burgos is a great experience.

Disliked: The site is very tired (toilets are clean) in all areas and requires significant updating to align with its four star rating, we’ve stayed in some super campsites in the last four weeks whilst touring and Fuentes Blancas is misrepresented as a premium site. The camping field is muddy and waterlogged due to recent rain, defined hard standing areas for mobile units would be a benefit.

Liked: Me gustó la cercanía a la ciudad y lo verde del camping, tanto en suelo como en la cantidad de arboles de cara al verano. También me gustó el bar/restaurante, la limpieza de los lavabos a pesar de no ser modernos y el tamaño del camping. Destacar que es un camping plano y sin reserva de número de parcela, es decir al llegar eliges.

Disliked: El acceso y salida son un poco justos, me costó salir con la caravana porque entraban otras y esto no estaba muy controlado. No me gustó que se inundaran tanto las parcelas, por mala suerte porque llovió demasiado, pero podría volver a pasar y no drenan bien. Recomiendo elegir bien dónde colocar la caravana, porque se forman charcos grandes y aunque la puedes cambiar, no es tan sencillo como una camper o autocaravana una vez instalados.

Liked: Good location 2 miles from city and natural environment near river.

Disliked: Looked very tired, maybe due to being end off season. Shower blocks closest to us closed. Bar restaurant not great quality environment. Open pit echoes prevented privacy.

Liked: Lovely green site next to a long flat well paved walk into the centre beside the river.

Disliked: Though there were plenty of toilet and shower blocks the facilities inside were poor and well past their best. In the block we used 3 of the 4 showers were broken - hanging off the wall, drains, hooks and locks broken and tiles missing and cracked. Very unexpected and disappointing.

Local attractions

You might opt for a day on the beach or the Camping Fuentes Blancas terrace first, but do go forth to Burgos soonish, for spectacular sights galore in this splendid old city. Probably the most famed Burgos attraction is its cathedral, a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 13th century and with various bits and pieces added since. Indoors, art buffs can browse around the many paintings and sculptures of the cathedral, where there's work by the Colonia family and Gil de Siloé among many others. Kids might like a look around the Museum of Human Evolution/Museo de la Evolución Humana, the most visited museum in Burgos; if not, whirl them around the biking and rambling paths of one of the city parks; the Parque del Castillo has play areas as well as spectacular views of the city.
