It's all about peace, love and good vibes at Casa La Paz (that's 'Peace House' in the local lingo). Sí – and this hillside site in southern Spain lives up to its relaxed reputation with a fab outdoor pool, far-reaching vistas and landscaped garden surrounds. In terms of nature spots to explore, here you'll be spoiled for choice – mountains, lakes and the Med can all be reached in a jiffy. This nature hub is located in the sweetest of spots – migrating birds fly back and forth over these hills on their way to and from Africa at various points throughout the year, making Casa La Paz a brill base for fans of feathered flight (eagles can sometimes be spotted circling these valleys, too). Gnarlier pursuits can also be had hereabouts, like rock climbing and dare-devil treks along the cliffside Caminito del Rey trail. This place is all about chilled outdoor living, so there's a shaded terrace on hand with plenty of space to lounge about in and a barbecue zone where you can grill your grub just the way you like it. El Chorro (10 minutes' drive) has plenty of tapas spots, bars and family-friendly restaurants if you fancy sampling the local cuisine; there's also a supermarket here where you can stock up on sunscreen, sandwich bits and other holiday essentials.

Local attractions

An emerald-green lake where you can fish and swim, sweet-smelling pine forests and a hydroelectric dam (because why not?) can all be seen in nearby El Chorro (10 minutes' drive). While in the area, stop off in town to sort an outdoor climbing or abseiling session with one of El Chorro's expert guides. The Caminito del Rey trail is also close by (30 minutes) – make sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment. These rocky valleys are well worth exploring – check out the viewpoint and castle ruins at Bobastro (30 minutes) where ancient Moorish and Roman stones can still be seen. Fancy surveying this rugged landscape from the saddle? A highly rated local riding school has horseback treks for all ages and abilities (20 minutes). Craving the sand and sangría of the Costa del Sol? Day trips to the seaside are a breeze at Casa La Paz, with top resorts like Marbella, Fuengirola and Torremolinos all reachable in just over an hour’s drive. This is where to head for tiddler-focused ents, too, like the rides and slides at Tivoli World theme park or Aqualand's mega-sized splash zone (both 40 minutes).
