If sandy beaches, ocean views and sunsets that are muy bonito is your dream recipe for switched-off hols, park up for a stay at Sanlúcar AC Parking, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda in the Cadiz province of Spain’s Andalucía. The site is right on the Costa de la Luz, so pack for beachy days under the Spanish sun, as the nearest beach is about a minute’s walk from base, and a quick jaunt into Sanlúcar will set you up for paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking along the town’s sandy stretches. For a change of scenery, climb into the saddle to pedal along the fab coastal greenway from Sanlúcar to Chipiona, with stops at the 13th-century castle and stunning lighthouse. And then? Take a break from sand, surf and cycling with a day kicking back on site: put your feet up, grab a book and pass some time in peace and quiet, or steal a little siesta in the lazy, hazy afternoon hours. When you’re ready to eat, saunter across the road to Gaspar’s for some eats, or wander into town for tapas and more substantial fare. Liked La acogida, nos explicó todo muy bien y nos aconsejó lugares para comer y visitar. Los baños estaban siempre muy limpios.

Local attractions

There’s plenty to do within an hour and a half of the site, but before you wander too far have a nose around Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The seaside town has palaces and castles, bike tours and scenic ruins, but it’s fans of the vino who’ll be best served: there are dozens of bodegas to choose from, and many are handily within walking (stumbling?) distance of home base. Stick with the urban with a day trip to Jérez (35 minutes’ drive) for museums, horseback riding tours and the zoo, or to Cadiz (40 minutes) for castles, Roman ruins and the pretty 18th-century gardens at Park Genoves. If that’s not enough for you, Seville and its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites are an hour and a half away, with the extremely photographic Plaza de España an absolute must. For some time in the outdoors, head 25 minutes away to Doñana National Park, Europe’s largest nature reserve: trek along the wetland trails, through the pine forests and among the dunes and keep an eye out for lynx and the elusive Spanish imperial eagle. Fancy pushing the boat out a bit? Clamber aboard a ferry in Tarifa (an hour and a half from base); within an hour or so, you’ll be strolling the streets, markets and galleries of Tangier, Morocco.
