A glamping site by the beach, surrounded by woods and with urban amenities within easy walking distance as well? Yes indeed, this is a truly excellent location that Kampaoh El Puerto has, with furnished tents tucked away in a protected nature reserve of pine and eucalyptus trees 100 metres from La Puntilla beach. That seaside setting is pretty fabulous, as you’ll be able to stroll straight out onto the soft sands whenever you fancy it and have a swim in the calm sea (it’s part of a sheltered bay so the water doesn’t tend to get too choppy around here). And when you require something a little bit livelier? The town of El Puerto de Santa María is about 15 minutes’ walk away, and as part of the ‘sherry triangle’ it’s no surprise to find that there are plenty of bars and restaurants up there, as well as shops for your picnic supplies back at camp. The town is a lovely place for a wander as well, with a charming Old Town and several historic buildings to visit. It’s likely there will be times when you don’t fancy the walk though, so it’s handy that there are plenty of facilities on site too, including a restaurant (specialising in seafood) and a mini market. A playground, a large swimming pool and a programme of activities for adults and kids should help you work up an appetite for whatever meal option you choose.

Local attractions

A stroll around El Puerto de Santa María is the place to start, of course – it will take you about 15 minutes to walk to the centre of town to visit the medieval Saint Marcos Castle, see the cathedral and take in gorgeous architecture like the Baroque-style Casa Palacio De Los Leones. There are several sherry bodegas to visit too, including Bodegas Osborne and Bodegas Gutiérrez Colosía (book ahead for tours and tastings). The hub of the ‘sherry triangle', Jerez de la Frontera, is not far off either (25 minutes’ drive), with some stunning architecture to see too – the Moorish Alcazar is a particular highlight. For other urban wanders, you could fit in trips to Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Cádiz (both 25 minutes) or the pretty ‘pueblo blanco’ of Arcos de la Frontera (45 minutes). Some downtime among all of that? As well as the beach by the site there are several more to seek out nearby – Playa De Las Redes (10 minutes) and Playa de Valdegrana (15 minutes) are a couple of the top picks.
