As you might have gleefully discovered before arrival, the Andalusia region of Almeria is the driest in Europe, and so arid that it's also the site of the continent's only desert. (Westerns have been shot in cactus-filled Tabernas for decades.) So as you'd might expect, it's all very sunny round these here parts too: the region around Camping Los Escullos, a family-friendly park in Nijar, gets about 328 days of solid sun a year and temperatures very rarely drop below 20 degrees Celsius. Outdoor sports can be had in this climate all year round, so Los Escullos has set up its site accordingly, adding a sports ground for guests to tackle tennis, football, basketball and volleyball. Less energetically, there's a big outdoor pool heated by solar panels, a spacious sun terrace with deckchairs and parasols, and free wifi in all areas. The Camping Los Escullos pitches all have access to the site amenities of two loo blocks with hot showers (heated with solar energy in summer and with gas in winter), disabled facilities, a washing-up area and a laundry room with tumble dryer. Another sunny little touch here? The site playground is next to the Los Escullos restaurant, so you can keep a beady eye on the kids while you tuck into some tasty local dishes.

Liked: Me gustó la estructura del camping, lo limpio y ordenado. Muchas opciones de actividades para familias y niños.

Disliked: Está lejos de supermercados y gasolineras. Las parcelas también me perecieron muy oscuras.

Liked: Música en directo , limpieza baños sobre todo el fin de semana , entre semana menos . Pistas se fútbol para niños. Sitio

Disliked: Falta de animación para adolescentes, salida a las 12. Agua fría en la ducha tres días , la basura hay que sacarla afuera . Si estás en la otra punta del camping es un caminito con las bolsas grandes .

Liked: This is our fourth stay at Los Escullos. We always come for a week in July and a few nights over Easter. The beaches that are close to the site (15 min by car) are stunning. We live in Malaga and love Cabo de Gata for its charm, beautiful beaches and it’s the real Spain! The beaches are perfect for snorkelling and kayaking. Los Escullos has a fantastic on site restaurant with the best Fish & Chips, an entertainment team, on site shop, a large pool with plenty of sun beds. The pitches are a good size and covered in the summer months. The staff have always been friendly and the bathrooms are spotlessly clean. All in all it’s a 5* camp site. We travel a lot in our Motorhome and this site is one of the best we have found in the last 4 years of travelling around Espana.

Disliked: Nothing to complain about.

Disliked: Típico camping de costa frecuentado por mucha gente ruidosa y maleducada que no tiene respeto de las normas, por ejemplo la básica de no hacer ruido a partir de las 00:00h no hay vigilantes para controlar

Liked: Spacious and quiet pitch, own water tap Shop was reasonably priced, fully stocked Swimming pool was spacious and clean , when we arrived at the pool always found 2 beds available Showers and toilets were clean and hot water Laundry was reasonable price Very quiet considering it's a big site

Disliked: People keeping sun beds , while they are not using the pool ( we were there afew hours and the towels /beds were never used . So other people/families are arriving and having to sit on the floor or leave

Liked: Alles war super, Schwimmbad, alles war sauber. Geschäft war gut sortiert. Der Strand ist etwa 1 km vom Camping entfernt. In der Nacht war ruhig und man kann wirklich gut schlafen.Wir empfehlen sehr.

Liked: Buenas, nos encantó que tuviese actividades para los más peques ya que puedes disfrutar más de la tranquilidad del camping ya que está cerrado y muy bien organizado, tiene bares y tiendas por si no te quieres llevar comida no te preocupes que allí hay de todo y es ideal para hacer planes con los peques de la familia ellos se lo pasan muy bien y disfruta de la sencillez de poder jugar sin preocupaciones. Nos encantó.

Route directions

The site is located in the Parque Natural Cabo de Gata. On the A7, take Exit 750 towards San José until you find a detour to the left towards Los Escullos-La Isleta-Rodalquilar. A few kilometres on, the entrance to the site is on the right.

Local attractions

As it's Almeria, a whole heap of excellent attractions can be found in the area surrounding Camping Los Escullos, like birdwatching among the desert landscape of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar natural park, visiting the casas cuevas (cave houses) in Barrio de Chanca, Alhabia, Gádor and Benahadux, or seeing the Alcazaba 10th-century castle built by Khalifa Abdh-ur-Rehman III. Beaches are never far away in Andalusia either: Playa Los Escullos is a 20-minute walk away, and San Miguel de Levante, San Miguel de Poniente, La Garrofa, San Telmo and Las Olas are all within a short drive for activities like windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkelling (lying back and sunbathing is allowed too). Finally, anyone for golf? A few splendid golf courses are in the Cabo de la Gata park – and as it's Almeria, you can even tee off on a desert course…
