As you might have gleefully discovered before arrival, the Andalusia region of Almeria is the driest in Europe, and so arid that it's also the site of the continent's only desert. (Westerns have been shot in cactus-filled Tabernas for decades.) So as you'd might expect, it's all very sunny round these here parts too: the region around Camping Los Escullos, a family-friendly park in Nijar, gets about 328 days of solid sun a year and temperatures very rarely drop below 20 degrees Celsius. Outdoor sports can be had in this climate all year round, so Los Escullos has set up its site accordingly, adding a sports ground for guests to tackle tennis, football, basketball and volleyball. Less energetically, there's a big outdoor pool heated by solar panels, a spacious sun terrace with deckchairs and parasols, and free wifi in all areas. The Camping Los Escullos pitches all have access to the site amenities of two loo blocks with hot showers (heated with solar energy in summer and with gas in winter), disabled facilities, a washing-up area and a laundry room with tumble dryer. Another sunny little touch here? The site playground is next to the Los Escullos restaurant, so you can keep a beady eye on the kids while you tuck into some tasty local dishes.

Liked Best site we found in the area. Large site with good level pitches and shade from trees in winter and awnings in summer.
Efficient reception with adjacent cafe / restaurant and shop, both of a good standard and reasonable prices considering they have a captive audience!
Fantastic showers, toilets etc. Very modern and cleaned throughout the day.
ACSI Cards accepted.
Always at high capacity, so plan well ahead and book for following year of returning !!

Liked Large very busy site with good facilities. Location very near the coast and a couple of small village/ towns feels pleasantly rural but connected. Good coastal walks from the campsite. Pitch was a little tight for the motorhome (8m) although this was probably a function of booking late!
Facilities were clean despite being well used and the staff were all very friendly and helpful.

Liked Nice, pretty remote site in a natural park, on the coast. Nice walks to pebble beaches and the Isleta del Moro - a small fishing village. Good bathroom facilities. By far the best thing about this site was the restaurant which was fantastic and very inexpensive. Had the BEST tinto de verano I've ever had in Spain - think they add vermouth to give it a fresh aftertaste. Good shop too. We wanted to do quite a bit of washing and there were 4 washers but there was only one dryer for general use which was out of order when we arrived and stayed that way for our 5 night stay (despite there being TWO allocated dryers for pet bedding - go figure). We couldn't air dry because there were 40 mph winds.

Disliked We have an 8m long motorhome and were allocated a VERY narrow plot at the end of a row (see pictures), which my talented husband managed to manoeuvre us into. But it meant there was little to no outside space to sit out, whilst ALL of our neighbours enjoyed a large sunny oblong plot with plenty of room not only for their outfit, but also various awnings/ tents/ tables/ chairs/ bikes. We stayed there one night but then went to the office to politely ask if we could move for the remaining 4 nights of our stay. We were initially told there were no appropriate vacant spaces - despite there being plenty on a site of over 200 pitches. When we asked about the vacant plot on our row we were told we could have it for one night, which was no use. It remained VACANT for the rest of our stay, apart from the last night, when they allocated it to a small camper van. This took away from what otherwise was a great site.

Route directions

The site is located in the Parque Natural Cabo de Gata. On the A7, take Exit 750 towards San José until you find a detour to the left towards Los Escullos-La Isleta-Rodalquilar. A few kilometres on, the entrance to the site is on the right.

As it's Almeria, a whole heap of excellent attractions can be found in the area surrounding Camping Los Escullos, like birdwatching among the desert landscape of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar natural park, visiting the casas cuevas (cave houses) in Barrio de Chanca, Alhabia, Gádor and Benahadux, or seeing the Alcazaba 10th-century castle built by Khalifa Abdh-ur-Rehman III. Beaches are never far away in Andalusia either: Playa Los Escullos is a 20-minute walk away, and San Miguel de Levante, San Miguel de Poniente, La Garrofa, San Telmo and Las Olas are all within a short drive for activities like windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkelling (lying back and sunbathing is allowed too). Finally, anyone for golf? A few splendid golf courses are in the Cabo de la Gata park – and as it's Almeria, you can even tee off on a desert course…
