Fuse city breaks and a retreat into Slovenian nature reserves with ready-made accommodation at family-friendly holiday park… all three are on the menu at SunLodge at Camping Terme Čatež, a site geared towards an action-packed break in Brežice. Just over an hour's drive from Ljubljana and 50 minutes from the medieval city of Zagreb, there are also nature reserves and mountain ranges within reach… along with an aqua park, restaurants and activities on site. Reserve plenty of energy, as the activities include tennis and football, indoor swimming pools and outdoor swimming pools with an aqua park that's got slippery waterslides and water climbing frames… or a lazy river you can float around when you fancy resting for a little while. Refresh and refuel with an ice cream or meal from one of the several restaurants on site, including a restaurant handily close to the aqua park so you won’t need to walk too far. There’s also a wellness centre for soothing sore muscles with a massage or deep-cleansing pores in the sauna. Ensure you never run too low on snacks with a visit to the on-site food shop, or pick up fresh bread to pair with grilled meats cooked up in the communal barbecue area. There are kitchen facilities at your accommodation, but if you’re short on time there’s a snack bar you can drop into too.

Local attractions

Venture into the local town of Brežice, marked by the Brežice Water Tower (10 minutes’ drive) and Brežice Castle (five minutes), a two-tiered 16th-century castle with a heritage museum. Tour another cool castle, Podsreda Castle (35 minutes), in the North-Kozjansko Regional Park (35 minutes), where you can also dedicate time to walking, cycling or birdwatching around the nature trails. The Žumberak Mountains (an hour) are within reach for steeper paths. Closer by, there’s the Tepec- Palačnik forest park (35 minutes) with more walks and a lookout over the remains of the old town of Samobor (25 minutes for this town's castle and historic centre). City break calling? Take a day trip to Slovenia’s green capital, Ljubljana (an hour), where you can take a cruise down the river, visit the dragon bridge or take the funicular to a medieval fortress. In the opposite direction and over the border, Zagreb (50 minutes) has a Neo-Gothic cathedral, quirky museums and shoppable squares.
