A spa break without spending too many of your hard-earned pennies? A splendid idea, and one that’s certainly an option at Kamp Dolenjske Toplice, on the banks of the Sušica river in the spa resort of Dolenjske Toplice. This area of south-eastern Slovenia is known for its focus on wellness and the town still has several thermal spas, public parks and sports facilities. Settle in here and you’re niftily placed for trotting over to the wellness centre next door; rather fably, you’re also entitled to preferential rates here (excellent news both for folks planning a full-on pamper day of massages, saunas and thermal water wallowing, or those who just fancy a swim in the kid-friendly pools). The site’s also close to short walking and cycling trails for all abilities and other activities including fishing, canoeing and rafting on the Krka river. Fuel for all these alfresco antics can be picked up at the town’s restaurants and shops, which are a leisurely five-minute stroll away. Facilities include free wifi, a launderette, a washing-up area and bathrooms with toilets and showers. You can also hire bikes and scooters to explore the local area.

Local attractions

If you feel the need for a bit of activity before you can justify a spa soak, that’s easily sorted. Gather some chums for games of tennis, volleyball or basketball on the courts in town, or have a chat with one of the activity centres to join one of the canoe or kayak tours heading out to the Krka river. Should you fancy stretching your legs on a walk, there are plenty of trails running around the town, or you could take the half-hour drive to Kočevski Rog forest. To see the trees from a different angle, head to the canopy trails at Otočec Adventure Park, also about half an hour away. Throw some history into the mix with a visit to Soteska Castle (10 minutes away), or the cathedral and museums in Novo Mesto (15 minutes). Those with sleuthing skills may also manage to find Baza 20, the secret headquarters of the Slovenian liberation movement during World War II (20 minutes).
