General

  • Riverside site 200 metres from the beach in northern Portugal
  • Swim to Spain across the Minho estuary
  • A kilometre from Caminha and 8km from Portugal's oldest rock festival

It's a cinch to get to the beach from Parque Orbitur Caminha on the northern Portuguese coast – and to Spain, afternoons of fishing and surfing, villages and forts, and the oldest rock festival in the land.

Beach and waters first. Parque Orbitur Caminha is in the very north-western corner of Portugal, a mere 200 metres from some splendid sands and clear waters for sunbathing, surfing, swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking and fishing. It's on the mouth of the Minho river, Portugal's natural border with Spain: if you're a strong swimmer you can strike across the estuary and into Spain from local town Caminha.

The shops and amenities of Caminha are a kilometre away, along with the local tourist office where you can get details of the several local trails around ancient forts and comely old villages around here to investigate by foot, bike or car. Portuguese cuisine can be sorted in town too, such as locally landed fish, seafood and meat platters, or a regional speciality of bacalhau (salted cod).

Back at home, Parque Orbitur Caminha is in a pinewood, with plenty of space to potter around or find a space under the trees to snooze. If you're not eating out in Caminha, a bar-restaurant and mini market are on site: just bring your own cooking equipment for your cabin if you're sorting your own meals.

And that rock festival? The municipality of Caminha includes the parish of Vilar de Mouros, on the banks of the Coura river, where peeps have been rocking out at the Vilar de Mouros Festival since 1965.

Please note

Entertainment and activities are available between 01/07 and 01/09.

Local attractions

Local town Caminha is on the southern side of the Minho estuary, the river that marks the border between Portugal and Spain, and about two kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. It's a beaut area, made up of the wide mouth of the estuary, pine forests, sandbars, the spectacular sight of the Santa Tecla mountain, and a fine beach set across from a 17th-century fortress.

Caminha's rightly popular with holidaymakers from Portugal and Spain; the area also has Moledo (three kilometres) and Vila Praia de Ancora, a pretty place for swimming, fishing, surfing and windsurfing. If you're a strong swimmer, you can set off from the waters of Caminha too, to reach Spain across the estuary's mouth (and if you don't fancy that, car ferries run to Spain from town).

Kayaking, sailing and paddleboarding trips all start from Caminha if you're in a watery frame of mind. Another option is the watermills and river setting (and rock festival, remember) of Vilar de Mouros eight kilometres away, or seeing the coastal strongholds of Forte da Lagarteira (8 kilometres) and Forte do Cão (12 kilometres).
