  • Small site in private gardens in the village of Janas
  • Five minutes' drive from the coast, 15 from Sintra and 40 from Lisbon
  • Pool, kitchen, sun loungers, outdoor sofas and shaded tables
Days out in Sintra and Lisbon, or coastal times on the beach at Azenhas do Mar? Plonk yourselves down within easy reach of them all at Sintra Camping Garden, a small site in the gardens of a property in the village of Janas. This is a most strategic spot for outings around the Cascais area – it’s five minutes' drive to the coast, 15 minutes to the fairytale-like buildings of Sintra or around 40 minutes to the vibrant streets of Lisbon. Not brought a car? Flag down a bus for the ride to Sintra (and then on to Lisbon if you so desire) or borrow one of the site’s four bikes for local exploring – they’re free to use (thumbs up for free things…). There’ll be no need for wheels in order to sort eats – a well-equipped kitchen on site has a gas cooker, microwave and fridge. Supplies can be picked up in the village five minutes away on foot, where there’s a couple of supermarkets and a bakery as well as restaurants and coffee shops if you’d rather eat out. Back at base there’s plenty of scope for sunbathing, snoozes and snacks – sun loungers, outdoor sofas and shaded tables are scattered around the place for just those purposes. Should the weather get a bit toasty, slope off for a dip in the swimming pool before hosing off in one of the site’s hot showers.

Electric gravel and hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked Beautiful peaceful garden site with fabulous pitches, a lovely pool, generous shared kitchen facilities and very clean showers and loos. We loved the dogs, chickens and ducks, which were all part of the experience and the hosts were delightful. Helpful, welcoming and hospitable, even kindly giving us some fruit from their garden for our journey home! We booked one night and ended up staying 3. We wished we could have stayed longer but had to move on to Northern Spain to catch our ferry home to the UK. Will definitely return! After travelling through France and Spain for months we honestly thought this was one of our 2 favourite campsites. Sintra is amazing, with so many historic and cultural places and we adored Azenhas do Mar:
a beach nestled below a picturesque village which features a natural swimming pool carved into the rocks. Another advantage of staying here is the temp at night - much cooler than Southern Spain and the rest of Portugal - so we slept well for the first time in weeks! Also the site is set in a little village - Janas, which has a wonderful cooperative which sells local produce and is a fab place to eat. Great for veggies like us too.

Disliked Having to leave in order to travel home.

Liked The location is lovely, tranquil surroundings and close to both the beach and Sintra. Amenities are nice and clean, basic cooking facilities and bathrooms. Local village has a well stocked shop in walking distance where you can pick up supplies.

Electric gravel and hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked I have traveled camper parks in five countries now and this is by far my favorite. The host Carlos is amazing (how many languages does he speak?) The grounds were well kept and so peaceful. You have everything you need. Loved the chickens and dogs too.

Electric gravel and hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked Very close to Sintra

Disliked No instruction on arrival, gates closed and only a number to ring, instructions about second gate that is open would have been helpful before arrival, bathrooms are bad, shower head waist height, hot water lasted 2 mins, didn’t get hair washed properly, basically this camp is some guys back driveway. Also all the restaurants working 3km were closed on a wed. So make sure you have food if you stay that day of the week!

From the manager: Dear Hayley, our contact is always available and we meet guests at gates to show the facilities. We regret the gas finished on your shower and it will happen to a guest once a week and we change the bottle immediately. There is restaurant and supermarkets 4 minute walking distance.

Electric gravel and hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked Really nice camping, there was everything is needed :) well equipped kitchen, clean bathrooms and swimming pool, hot shower, nice owner. In the close neighborhood there is shop, cafe and Adea Coop which is super nice restaurant and shop with quite nice prices.

Disliked The only thing that could be renovated are shower doors.

Electric gravel and hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked Carlos and his team were very pleasant and helpful

Disliked No set pitches and lots of campers and tents crammed together.
Toilets next to the cooking area and shower cold. Carlos did say my husband was unlucky as the gas cylinder had run out and he did replace it. Toilets and showers unisex and doors very flimsy with door hook fixed with hair elastic.
Picture shows sun beds by the pool. There were none when we were there.

Disappointing site

Local attractions

To the coast first? A fine choice. Aim for Azenhas do Mar (five minutes’ drive) to wander around a whitewashed seafront village and splash in seawater pools, or make a break to the beach at Praia das Maças (10 minutes), where the waves lend themselves well to surfing or bodyboarding, and there’s another saltwater pool if you decree the water too choppy for a swim. Stunning Sintra (15 minutes) is an absolute must-visit too – it’s packed with colourful palaces, cobbled streets and cracking views. The Moorish castle, the National Palace and Quinta da Regaleira estate are all worth a bit of your time, as is Pena Palace, a little further out of town (25 minutes from the site). There’s stacks of stuff to see and do in Lisbon (40 minutes): ride the trams, head up to São Jorge Castle for city views, amble through the Alfama district and seek out sweet treats at the best pasteis de nata bakeries. If you don’t fancy a city day, stay closer to home with a meander around Monserrate Palace and Park (10 minutes) or a stroll and a sip at Colares Regional Winery (five minutes).
