Oh, they’re a friendly bunch at Travelvan Park Salgado in the little Leiria village of Famalicão… come rain or shine, day or night, there’s usually a gentle hum of activity going on somewhere around the place. Much of that sociable stuff centres around the bar area, where guests gather for drinks, light meals, snacks and general convivial chitchat. This central area’s also the place to borrow books from the library, pick up tasty treats and crafty things from the shop and find out what cultural events are being laid on by the site owners. Evening entertainment is of course a key part of this offering: come along in summer to see the party spill out onto the comfy seating of the partly shaded terrace, with barbecue dinners to devour. At chillier times, bundle into the cosy cinema room or look out for evenings being warmed by a triple whammy of a bonfire, a grilled sausage and a glass of local port wine. This isn’t just superficial socialising though – the folk here are keen for guests to get to know the area, so they frequently organise such things as walking tours, group bike rides to Nazaré and São Martinho do Porto beaches, lectures and painting classes. Of course, it’s quite possible that you might like a little time to yourself on hols as well, and that’s perfectly possible too – hire bikes to pedal off to the coast, walk into the village for some café time or set out for fishing, mountain bike trails, hikes and paragliding in the surrounds.

Local attractions

You’re so close to the coast here, it’d be something of an error to miss out on at least one beach day (or preferably several…). There are huge dunes, wide sands and good fishing at Salgado (10 minutes’ drive); famed surfing waves and surf schools in Nazaré (10 minutes) and calmer waters for kids and swimmers at São Martinho do Porto (15 minutes). If it’s all a bit chilly to get in the waves, try the warmer waters of Norpark waterpark in Nazaré. Also close by are some pretty towns that lend themselves well to a bit of wandering: perhaps the stunning ornate monastery and wine museum in Alcobaça will pique your interest, or the ceramic museum and shaded parks of Caldas da Rainha. Both are around 20 minutes away by car, and just happen to have wineries nearby for picking up evening tipples. For something a bit bigger on the urban front, aim north for half an hour to get to the castle, cathedral and museums of Leiria; to change scenery completely, drive the half-hour to the open spaces of Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park.
