General

  • Small family-friendly site in the Montesinho Natural Park
  • 25 minutes' drive from the medieval town of Bragança
  • On-site restaurant serving homemade local meals and snacks

It’s a truly green and pleasant part of the world up here in the north-eastern corner of Portugal. If it’s peace and quiet you seek, you’ll find it in spades both at Parque de Campismo Cepo Verde itself and in the surrounding Montesinho Natural Park, one of the country’s largest protected areas.

Choose to rest your head here and you’ll be treated to quiet pitches in the woods, shaded by native chestnut, cherry and oak trees. This spot was once a Roman settlement, and a mighty fine location they chose too if you like a mountain view or two. These days it’s an equally enviable locale as you can amble straight out onto several of the park’s marked trails to explore on foot.

Push yourself to the end of your hike safe in the knowledge that a refreshing dip in the outdoor pool awaits upon your return to the site (a small charge applies for pool use). If there’s any energy left in little legs, kids can be despatched to the playground or the sports area for a final burst of activity in the form of basketball or table tennis perhaps.

Appetites duly worked up, you can either whack a few steaks on the communal grills or wander over to the restaurant to choose your dinner from a menu of homemade traditional faves – wild boar, local cheeses and chestnut pudding might be among the tempting titbits on offer, depending on the season. A woodburning stove keeps things toasty on chillier nights.

Among the site’s amenities are a washing-up area, a washing machine, a chemical disposal point, a toilet block with hot showers and accessible facilities, and plenty of taps pouring forth a supply of fresh springwater. Wifi is available in the restaurant and main building, and there’s a small shop over there too that will save you having to lug your own wood, charcoal and gas to the site.

Please note

All customers: access to the swimming pool is not included in the rate and is charged €1.50 per person per session.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 15/06 and 15/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Good site and helpful staff 08/10/2017

Choice of pitches so no problem there and size wasn't a problem either. Helpful staff who spoke pretty good English.

    Disliked:

Very dusty and fruit/figs on ground just where the pitches were. They stuck to your shoes and walked into the caravan.
Description and photos on Pitchup are slightly misleading. The walks are not near the site at all so you have drive to get to the starting point

From the manager...

Hi. Thanks for your comment. The problem with the cherries (not figs) was that 2017 was a excpetional year for cherries. A lot of people ate the cherries because they are really biological and from pure nature. Will cut sme branches to avoi that problem. Best wishes

The area, the pitch, the campsite, the restaurant & food, the facilities, the staff, the weather, the pool, the gifts, the national park. Just loved the whole place and will definitely go back. Booked for 2 nights and stayed for 6, would have stayed longer if we didn't have to catch the ferry!

    Disliked:

Lots of steps which my weary legs was not keen on. Did not realise the site was on a hill side when booked but all added to the charm.

The environment and Braganca was beautiful. The owner spoke English and that was very nice. They were very helpful.

    Disliked:

It was a pity that you have to pay for the swimming pool. Also there was not a nice place to relax for the bungalow. I mean There was no table and chairs. You could use a chair from inside the bungalow.

Local attractions

Wander out from the site and you’ll quickly be able to pick up some of the well-marked trails that run across the Montesinho Natural Park. In summer, you can pick cherries as you go, and in autumn join groups to learn about foraging for mushrooms.

Ask on site for details of hikes that suit your abilities and interests – if you have a car, perhaps drive the half hour to the village of Dine for a walk that takes in ancient lime kilns and a neolithic cave. Also half an hour away is Quintanilha, where you can take a walk along the banks of the Maçãs river to a bathing spot to cool off in the clear water. Guadramil, 50 minutes’ drive from the site, is the place to go if you’d like to spot wildlife as you go – deer and wolves are often seen around here.

It’s worth heading out of the park for a day to visit the town of Bragança, around a 25-minute drive away. Start with a wander around the medieval castle and citadel before heading over to the Romanesque Domus Municipalis. Also in town are the Military Museum and the Iberian Museum of Masks and Costume.
