  • Intimate, family-friendly site on the edge of Kampinos National Park
  • Abbey at Czerwińsk nad Wisłą 50 minutes’ drive; Warsaw 55 minutes
  • Playground; next door to an amusement park with a pool and waterslides
The expansive forests and wetlands of Kampinos National Park are at your fingertips when you stay at Julinek CAMP, a small seasonal site (open May–October) on the fringes of this vast nature reserve to the north east of Warsaw (the capital is about 55 minutes’ drive away). However, there’s no need to fret about being lost in the wilderness, away from all modern (urban) comforts: the village of Leszno is only a five-minute drive away along the DW579 road (which has large grassy verges if you decide to walk it – it’ll take you about half an hour). In addition to supermarkets where you can purchase kielbasa sausages and other Polish specialities to throw on the barbecue, there are also a couple of restaurants there. Choose between pitches on the edge of the forest or on a grassy glade. While you set up, the kids can explore what the site has in store for younger guests, starting with a playground (featuring a sandbox, swings and a crow’s nest) and a volleyball net for family tournaments. And there are bigger, more exciting things just around the corner: Amusement Park Julinek (less than five minutes’ walk) has treetop adventure courses, an assortment of bouncy structures and an aquatic park with twisting waterslides (and plenty of poolside loungers for the parents). Back at the site, there’s a modern and well-maintained amenity block with toilets and showers, plus a faucet with running water.

Local attractions

A vast network of hiking and cycling trails (including stretches of boardwalk) takes you through the diverse landscapes of Kampinos National Park, which range from dune systems to marshes and woodland. Keep your eyes peeled for the resident wildlife: elks, beavers and lynx, plus storks, cranes and raptors. The northern stretches of Kampinos reach the Vistula River. Along its banks are scenic points like Tereny zalewowe Wisły (half an hour’s drive), fishing at Nowy Secymin (half an hour) and the 12th-century abbey at Czerwińsk nad Wisłą (50 minutes), which houses Romanesque and Gothic frescoes. Start your exploration of Warsaw from the cobbled Old Town Market Square, lined with elegant, pastel-coloured buildings. From there, check out the 14th-century Royal Castle, or the interactive exhibits at the riverfront Copernicus Science Centre. Among several museums illustrating the history of the city (and the country) are the Warsaw Uprising Museum and the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
