Pitches

General

  • Kid-friendly woodland site less than half an hour's drive from Utrecht
  • Bowling, fossil field, pools, survival course, nature pond and BMXing
  • Miniature golf, sandy playground, football lessons and restaurant

You might not think of hills when you call to mind the Netherlands, famed for its flat lands... but you're missing a top Dutch trick if you've never contemplated clambering up hills here.

For spanning the province of Utrecht and part of North Holland, is the Utrecht Hill Ridge, 50 kilometres of sandhills from the Lower Rhine valley to Lake Gooi. It's the landscape surrounding the smashing family site of Vakantiepark Het Grote Bos, in the West Netherlands near Doom in the Utecht province, a spacious, scenic and green woodland park among the forests, moorlands and large estates of the Utrecht ridge.

As this is Holland, it may not be a huge surprise to learn that a popular way to tackle the ridge is by bike… hire commuter bikes, mountain bikes and electric bikes from the site team to go pedally forth into the sandhill surroundings, or get truly stuck into Dutch cycling and puff along to Utrecht, 16 kilometres away along the (mainly flat, of course) Arnhemse Bovenweg.

Het Grote Bos is a spectacular site for families, with leisurely pursuits for offspring of all ages. Mini archaeologists and naturalists can peer at the specimens in the fossil field and nature pond, before quizzing perplexed adults (you) about what exactly it is they've unearthed or spotted. There's also a survival course to test their nerves at and a spacious sandy playground with a sandpit, climbing frame and tyre swing.

There are loads of outdoor sports on site too, including miniature golf, bowling, tennis and BMXing on the purpose-built track. Football lessons are also available: you may have heard that the Dutch aren't too shabby at football either…

The heated seasonal pool has enough room for guests galore to splash around in, and comes with a separate paddling pool and stacks of water toys – just in case the kids feel they aren't being occupied enough.

Finally, even fussy sorts should be satisfied with the foodie options: a restaurant and snack bar open seven days a week in school holidays; a supermarket open during peak season, and freshly baked bread available every morning.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Wonderful holiday park in a wonderful woodland location. 22/08/2018

The holiday park is wonderful. A beautiful setting in a forest with many woodland cycle/walking trails on the doorstep. Good clean facilities. Helpful and friendly staff. Everyone there speaks fluent English. No parking on the camp pitches, I do wish more UK campsites would adopt this way, much safer. We will be looking to book again next year and try one of the other RCN Park s. Hopefully they are all as lovely as this one.

    Disliked:

There are, inexplicably, no hand-wash basins by the toilets and no soap either. You need to walk around the building from the toilets to the shower/washroom to rinse hands where there isn't any soap anyway. Strongly suggest you take hand sanitizer with you. That said, the sanitary facilities are excellent and generally very clean. The park is 99% made up of Dutch holiday makers so obviously everything is in the Dutch language. This is not really a problem or fault of the park but it is something to be aware of and you do feel a little lost and excluded from some activities like evening entertainment. Everybody there does speak fluent English though when needed.

We stopped here on the way touring to Germany, and didn't realise what a huge campsite this is! But we really enjoyed our visit- it is set mainly in woodland, and despite being so large, seemed quiet.
There is an outdoor swimming pool that kept the kids entertained for hours, as well as other activities.

There is a decent on-site bar/restaurant and shop. Toilets were of a good standard and generally kept clean.

Outside the park, there are some wonderful cycle rides to be had in the forest.

    Disliked:

It was very dusty- but that was probably mainly due to the long very hot summer.

The pitch was large enough for our rather big tent, car and trailor which was good. They spaced everyone out so everyone had lots of space. It was school holidays in England but not in Holland at the time so it was rather quiet anyway. They put is right next to the swing park with zip lines, bouncy pillows and climbing frame which was excellent for the kids, we could let them just run off and play whilst we did dinner etc. Facilities were super clean and really very lovely. They had a separate kids room with little showers or baths, a little loo and a baby bath with changing area plus lower sinks, it was lovely. Made wash time very easy. Adult facilities also really clean and modern. Remember to take your shower card with you as you'll need it to operate the water.
Park was secure as you need a pass to get in and out of the main barrier. Staff friendly and welcoming.
Amsterdam only a 45-60 minute journey away.

    Disliked:

Shop only open 8:30-11 most days and didn't have much in it. Better going to lidle or Aldi down the roan in Doorn.

Local attractions

The city of Utrecht, under half an hour's drive or about an hour's bike ride away, has cultural attractions and events of all sorts: it's been named in the top 10 of the world's most underrated destinations.

And… you'll probably want to get out by wheels around the Utrecht Hill Ridge. Take a bike or mountain bike around its hilly and forested landscape, to ride around the wildlife haven of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, or weave around the region's villages, like De Bilt, Zeist, Austerlitz, Elst and Rhenen.
