- Miniature golf, sandy playground, football lessons and restaurant
You might not think of hills when you call to mind the Netherlands, famed for its flat lands... but you're missing a top Dutch trick if you've never contemplated clambering up hills here.
For spanning the province of Utrecht and part of North Holland, is the Utrecht Hill Ridge, 50 kilometres of sandhills from the Lower Rhine valley to Lake Gooi. It's the landscape surrounding the smashing family site of Vakantiepark Het Grote Bos, in the West Netherlands near Doom in the Utecht province, a spacious, scenic and green woodland park among the forests, moorlands and large estates of the Utrecht ridge.
As this is Holland, it may not be a huge surprise to learn that a popular way to tackle the ridge is by bike… hire commuter bikes, mountain bikes and electric bikes from the site team to go pedally forth into the sandhill surroundings, or get truly stuck into Dutch cycling and puff along to Utrecht, 16 kilometres away along the (mainly flat, of course) Arnhemse Bovenweg.
Het Grote Bos is a spectacular site for families, with leisurely pursuits for offspring of all ages. Mini archaeologists and naturalists can peer at the specimens in the fossil field and nature pond, before quizzing perplexed adults (you) about what exactly it is they've unearthed or spotted. There's also a survival course to test their nerves at and a spacious sandy playground with a sandpit, climbing frame and tyre swing.
There are loads of outdoor sports on site too, including miniature golf, bowling, tennis and BMXing on the purpose-built track. Football lessons are also available: you may have heard that the Dutch aren't too shabby at football either…
The heated seasonal pool has enough room for guests galore to splash around in, and comes with a separate paddling pool and stacks of water toys – just in case the kids feel they aren't being occupied enough.
Finally, even fussy sorts should be satisfied with the foodie options: a restaurant and snack bar open seven days a week in school holidays; a supermarket open during peak season, and freshly baked bread available every morning.

Local attractions
The city of Utrecht, under half an hour's drive or about an hour's bike ride away, has cultural attractions and events of all sorts: it's been named in the top 10 of the world's most underrated destinations.
And… you'll probably want to get out by wheels around the Utrecht Hill Ridge. Take a bike or mountain bike around its hilly and forested landscape, to ride around the wildlife haven of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, or weave around the region's villages, like De Bilt, Zeist, Austerlitz, Elst and Rhenen.
