General

  • On the outskirts of Delft, easily accessible by public transport
  • Restaurant and shop with organic bakery
  • Bike hire, guided cycle tours, city walking tours, pool and solarium

Town days, city days, cycling days and swimming days… the artful setting of Recreatiecentrum Delftse Hout has access to them all.

Town and city days for starters: this peaceful place is on the outskirts of the city of Delft in the western Netherlands, 15 minutes' walk from the city centre and easily accessible by public transport. For more Dutch sightseeing, The Hague is 10 kilometres away, Rotterdam 15 and you can reach the many attractions of Amsterdam within 50 – or you could have a goud-a time at the Gouda Cheese Museum within about half an hour's drive…

For cycling and swimming days, a lake for dips, fishing and sailing is next to the site; the Delftse Hout arranges weekly guided evening cycle rides in high season; bikes can be hired at reception and maps are available at reception showing the local routes. Urban walking tours are arranged in summer too, taking you around the sights and attractions of the canal-ringed and pottery city of Delft.

Recreatiecentrum Delftse Hout is a good-sized and scenic site, welcoming families to its spacious pitches surrounded by greenery and woodland. It has good facilities for kids, including summer activities, a well-equipped playground with swings, slides and climbing frame, and a separate and colourful children's area in the clean and modern washrooms. Go-karts are available to rent if the offspring want to speed things up a notch.

Older kids and teens will probably approve of the table tennis area, set in a covered spot with nicely graffitied walls, while for more leisure, all ages can have dips in the pool or a sunbathing session alongside. Also on site is a restaurant serving local and international dishes, and a grocery shop with an organic bakery.

The amenity blocks have unlimited hot water as well as specially-designed facilities for disabled guests.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Facilities/activities including bike hire, go-carts hire are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Absolutely brilliant location for visiting Delft and beyond. The center of Delft is about 10-15 mins slow stroll away, or five minutes by bike. The railway station at Delft can take you onwards for day trips to The Hague / Amsterdam / Rotterdam.

The site itself has good facilities for families in particular, with a decent pool, play area, and hire of pedal go-karts.

Showering and toilet facilities are all located in one block, so factor this in to where you choose / are allocated a pitch. It also means that a LOT of people are using the same facilities, although we only had to wait for a shower on one occasion during four days (and a total of 16 showers between the two of us!). The facilities are pretty clean and tidy, although early in the morning and late at night are best, when they have just been cleaned.

The motorhome pitches have electricity / water - although you do pay extra for the electricity. It works out at about 3 Euros a day.

The on-site shop has most of the basics you'd need, plus really nice pastries and bread fresh each day.

    Disliked:

It can get VERY noisy with kids playing / screaming / crying.

However, if you book a site aimed at families you have to just accept it.

5* location. The site is located in a natural leisure area with a large lake, cycle paths and countryside and it's only a 15 minute walk along pleasant paths to Delft city centre.
5* Delft. Delft is a beautiful city. Historical, plenty of great places to eat and a relaxing place to while away the day.
5* Transport links. In the summer the bus collects from the campsite. The train station and tram are 20-25 minute walk from the site. Easy to travel to The Haugue/Den Haag by tram. Frequent trains to Rotterdam, Amsterdam etc.
    5* Peaceful site at night.
4* Shop. Good bakery (but limited supply) and all the necessary sold in the shop at a reasonable price.

    Disliked:

3* Campervan pitch was a bit tatty with sparse grass and a drain (not for waste water) located on the pitch so some odour. Pitches were wide but not very deep.
3* Cleanliness. The toilets needed cleaning far more often and staff were slow to replace toilet paper.

Although a big site, areas were split off and it still retained a private feel. Lovely lush grounds and a great location for Delft. We didn't feel like we were on a big site and although we did not have children with us there was plenty for them to do and it was well run and organised. Staff were lovely, very knowledgeable and always happy to help. There was a mix up with the booking but luckily I had rung up to check the day before we arrived but to their credit they found us and upgraded our pitch. Liked the pool, especially welcome with such high temps although possibly could have been bigger because it was packed all day. Showers adequate but they will be new ones for next year. Food was nice in the restaurant.

    Disliked:

Local attractions

The old city of Delft is best known for its fine blue pottery, a trade dating back in this part of South Holland to the mid-16th century (if you want to acquire your own anywhere in the world, check for the Delfts Blauw or Delft Blue name painted on the bottom of ceramic pieces). The city's streets and canal banks also house plenty of other attractions to see, including the Vermeer Centre, the Science Centre and the historic almshouses.

Hire a bike on site to pedal around one or more of the several cycle paths in the area, such as to the farming villages of the Green Heart region; the old church in the village of 't Woudt; the towns of Pijnacker-Nootdorp or Zoetermeer; along the Vliet Canal to The Hague; or along the Schie river towards Rotterdam.

Stick around close to the site for a day at the nature and recreation area next door, where there's a petting zoo, water playground and a beach next to the big recreational lake for dips, fishing and sailing.

Within day trip distance is another beach at Scheveningen (25 minutes' drive), the models of Madurodam miniature city (20 minutes), the UNESCO-listed site of the Kinderdijk windmills (45 minutes) and the tasty treats of the Gouda Cheese Museum, 35 minutes away; be sure to amble around the famed cheese market of this last too.
