- Family-friendly site just outside the village of Kelpen-Oler
- A 25-minute cycle from the Meuse river and Thorn; bicycle hire on site
- Indoor and outdoor playgrounds, a pétanque court and a fishing pond
Limburg: it’s known for its gorgeous green meadows, the blue of the canals and the Meuse and – of course – its many cycling paths. From Camping Geelenhoof, just outside the village of Kelpen-Oler, those cycling routes beckon. It’s a 25-minute cycle to the Meuse (and its riverside path) or the historic city of Thorn, nicknamed ‘the white city’ after the white brick houses in its city centre.
No bicycle? No problem. The site hires out bicycles of several varieties, including standard pedal bikes and tandems (with electric or non-electric options). At this site, you’re mere minutes from the Leudal cycling path, a 32-kilometre route past local country villages, windmills and coffee shops with splendid outdoor terraces (pedal, coffee, repeat…).
Some time must surely also be reserved for the excellent (and family-friendly) on-site facilities. There are indoor and outdoor playgrounds, a pétanque court and a fishing pond around the green grounds. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting during the high season, steal away to the lovely heated outdoor swimming pool for a few hours of lounging or leafing through a book around the sunbathing area’s sunloungers and parasols.
An on-site activity centre is also on hand for some slightly more traditional and unusual games (all for an additional fee). You might end up playing football golf, old Dutch games or even farmer’s darts, in which you'll aim pitchforks at targets in the form of haystacks. Toilets, showers, a covered washing-up area and a launderette are all taken care of at Camping Geelenhoof, as is a bread service.

Local attractions
Might you like to begin your getaway by getting to know some of the local history? Openluchtmuseum Eynderhoof (10 minutes’ drive) is worthy of your first stop. See how things were done in rural Limburg in the 1900s (breads baked, beers brewed and that sort of thing…). As for your second stop, that'll surely be the city of Thorn (10 minutes), with its white brick houses and big abbey church.
You may have had a long journey here, of course, so if you’re in need of somewhere to stretch your legs first and foremost, head along to the paths of Nationaal Park de Meinweg (25 minutes). Along the boardwalk, there are often stunning dragonflies and colourful butterflies flitting around.
Nationaal Park De Groote Peel (20 minutes) is another fine option for a day out on the trails, should you still have energy to spend. It may be small, but it’s one of the most bird-rich locations in the west of Europe. Keep your eyes peeled for migrating common cranes and the many resident species like black-necked grebes.
