River Meuse hikes, cycle rides and watersports on the doorstep, a working windmill and waterside cafés within 10 minutes’ stroll – you must be at Beesel aan de Maas, a splendidly peaceful campsite five minutes by car from Beesel in the South Netherlands. As it’s set on five acres of private land, there’s no traffic noise, so all you’ll hear on site is birdsong, and you have plenty of green countryside in which to exercise any doggy companions.
Practical facilities include toilets, drinking water, a washing-up area, grey water disposal and cassette emptying. Electric hook-ups for the pitches and hot showers are also available for a small extra charge.
When the weather isn’t playing nice, you can retreat to a shared dining area – where you can play family games, cook in fully equipped kitchens and get together with friends and families over meals. You can also have a potter around the heirloom vegetable garden, which has more than 200 varieties to choose from.
If you need a stock up of snacks for the kids, buy artisan ice cream from the local farm shop (10 minutes’ drive), where you can also pick up delicious regional cheeses and seasonal vegetables.

When you’re in the mood to drop some cash, Designer Outlet Roermond (15 minutes’ drive) has more than 200 designer fashion stores; if that’s a step too far for the kids, placate them with a day at Toverland (half an hour), where they can have a go on rollercoasters and splash around in the indoor waterpark.
For more fun on the water, lakeside Area X (20 minutes) has facilities for swimming and paddleboarding, and your youngsters can also clamber around on inflatable obstacle courses. And of course, five minutes on foot from the pitches takes you to the meandering River Meuse to hire sailing dinghies, discover the peaceful woodland trails at Musschenberg nature reserve (40 minutes), go coarse fishing or picnic overlooking the water.
If you’d appreciate the rare chance to spot beavers in the wild, creep along the banks of Schwalm brook (15 minutes’ walk), and they might just emerge from the water for you. To ensure you do catch sight of some wildlife, head for Nature and Animal Park Brueggen (20 minutes’ drive) to get up close to alpacas and nosy goats.
