Half an hour’s drive from lively Groningen in the North Netherlands, Camping De Poel is a small-scale, quiet campsite that is designed with families and nature-lovers in mind. The level grass pitches are surrounded by greenery, and there’s plenty of space for games and general running about in the centre of the field, as well as climbing frames and swings for younger kids.
At the entrance to the site, there is a cosy coffee hut where you can get coffee and tea, soft drinks and ice cream to keep the kids happy. If you need to do some stocking up in supplies, shops, a supermarket and basic amenities are all within 20 minutes by bike, handy for a quick grocery run without the car.
Dogs are allowed on site but must be kept on a lead; you can exercise them in the forest adjoining the site and please clean up your dog’s mess yourself. Numerous safe cycling paths also lead into the pleasantly flat Dutch countryside for family bike rides.
Practical facilities stretch to a modern toilet block with two rain showers and separate facilities for men and women. There’s also a disposal point for chemical toilets and a couple of washing-up sinks.
