  • Peaceful and family-friendly site half an hour’s drive from Groningen
  • Hooikiep nature reserve 10 minutes’ drive; LEGiO Museum 15 minutes
  • Well-kept grass pitches with play area and coffee hut on site
Small, quiet and nicely thought out for families – that’s the vibe at Camping de Poel, a couple of kilometres from Surhuisterveen in the North Netherlands. The level grass pitches here are surrounded by greenery for a relaxed natural atmosphere, and there’s a woodland running alongside the site where you can exercise your dogs (just make sure to keep them under control and clean up after them). Kids are very welcome too, and there’s plenty of space for games and general running about, along with a climbing frame and swings for younger kids – cleverly, all of that’s been set in the centre of the pitching field so parents can supervise in comfort from afar. At the entrance to the site is a cosy drinks hut where you can get coffee and tea, soft drinks and those all-important ice creams. For some stocking up on supplies, shops, a supermarket and basic amenities are all within 20 minutes by bike – handy for a quick grocery run without the car. Numerous safe cycling paths also lead into the pleasantly flat countryside for family bike rides. Practical facilities stretch to a modern toilet block with two rainfall showers and separate facilities for men and women. There’s also a disposal point for chemical toilets and a couple of washing-up sinks. Heading out into the local area, there are plenty of outdoor activities nearby (golf, watersports and nature walks among them), and the lively city of Groningen is half an hour’s drive away for a fix of culture and shopping.
