  • Family-friendly Christian site set among meadows and woodland
  • Surrounded by bike trails through countryside and traditional villages
  • Outdoor pool and Christian-orientated activities for grownups and kids
There are reams of reasons as to why guests return year after year to the friendly, family and Christian site of Vakantiepark De Sikkenberg, set among spectacular forests, heathlands, grasslands and handsome Dutch villages in Groningen’s Westerwolde region. First up are the activities for grownups and offspring of all ages from tiddlers to teens to young adults...then there are the spotless facilities, proximity to the pretty city of Groningen, and all the options for outdoorsy stuff on site and around its lush setting. The area is splendid for cycling and motorbike tours too, and if you’re bringing your an electric bike, a charging station is to hand to keep it topped up. Back at base, Sikkenberg’s inter-church school holiday activity programme for kids and teens is packed with pastimes such as games, walks and canoe tours, infants’ storytime, dance events, movie nights, acting workshops, musical events, bible readings and discussions. Grownups, meanwhile, can get on with mingling with fellow guests at coffee meetups; brushing up on their bible knowledge with study sessions, talks and workshops, or partaking in a spot of friendly competition at the site’s family sports tournaments. There’s plenty more to do on site too, including a seasonal pool and neighbouring kids’ pool, sports fields for games, and a playground for swings and clambers. Eats are easily sorted as well, with daily deliveries of fresh bread and an on-site mini market for picnic and barbecue supplies.

Local attractions

Several walking and cycling trails can be pedalled or promenaded upon direct from the site, with scenic trips along the nearby Veendam-to-Musselkanaal canal and the Ruiten river, around the 17th and 18th-century farms of Smeerling or any of the many other handsome villages that within easy reach. Highlights include Wedde – where the famous battle of Heiligerlee took place – and Ter Apel and its Bourtange fortress and UNESCO-listed medieval monastery. If you’re planning on taking a car, it’s highly recommended that you get out and explore Westerwolde's three municipalities Bellingwedde, Vlagtwedde and Stadskanaal, to have a poke around historic hotspots such the famed 16th-century fortified village of Oudeschans and Bourtange. Elsewhere, more sightseeing and outdoorsy options include the sandy ridges, streams and heather-covered lands of Buinen’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hondsrug Global Geopark, as well as several excellent local museums and a miniature golf course 20 minutes’ drive away in Sellingen.
