  • Safari tents on a friendly site five kilometres from Rodenburg
  • A 20-minute drive from the canals and cafés of Groningen city
  • Outdoor swimming pool, lake beach and several playground areas
Dump your bags, start your hol – that’s the arrival plan for guests at Recreatiepark Westerkwartier, a family-friendly glamping site in the Groningen area three kilometres from Niebert village and five from the larger town of Rodenburg. It’s a cinch to get set up here, as the safari tents have been kitted out to make life easy – beds are in place, the outdoor furniture’s all ready to recline on and there’s a compact but well-equipped kitchen unit. (Handily, this is on wheels so you can roll it outside for a bit of alfresco cheffing on a fine day or retreat under cover should the clouds gather overhead.) With all that already in place, you can make a start on the important task of selecting ways to fill your days... For starters that might include diving into the outdoor pool, sunbathing and swims at the lake beach, bopping a few table tennis balls around or taking the tiddlers to one of several play areas scattered around the site. In summer it’s worth also checking out the schedule of activities laid on – aquatic antics, crafts and various games are all on the cards, as are daily walks for those who fancy a bit of company while stretching their legs. Beyond the site’s boundaries are plenty of bike routes to meander along, a couple of trout ponds to fish and a goodly collection of museums, canals and cafés 20 minutes' drive away in Groningen.

Local attractions

If you’ve come to these parts for fresh air days (a fine idea), start with a wander in De Oude Riet nature reserve next door to the site, or pack your rods up for a day at the fishing lakes two kilometres away. Lengthier walks can be had on the trails of the Alde Feanen National Park (25 minutes’ drive), while those who’d prefer to paddle can launch canoes at Leekstermeer (10 minutes). Bearing more than a passing resemblance to a mini Amsterdam, Groningen city (20 minutes’ drive) is certainly worth a day or few of your time. Like its larger cousin, this is a city where you can amble alongside canals, sip coffee in characterful cafés and poke about in independent shops. The Groninger Museum, maritime museum and graphic design museum make for interesting visits too. For further family-friendly days out, take the half-hour drive to meet the polar bears, penguins and other beasties at AquaZoo Friesland or encourage a bit of good behaviour with a trip to the National Prison Museum (25 minutes).
