Cut up the waves on Netherland’s west coast with a surfboard or kiteboard, take yourself on Friesland’s eleven cities’ tour or wander past flower fields in the countryside. From Camping Slachtehiem, pack your itinerary full and embrace your new farm life at this small rural site in the splendid Friesland countryside. A dairy farm turned into a peaceful space for guests to settle into the peaceful surroundings, at this site, you can listen to the sounds of the frogs and birds and watch how cows, sheep and horses graze nearby. Plus, only 10 kilometres from the coast, the nearest sandy beach is a 15-minute drive, so that you can take a plunge in the North Sea. This spacious wildlife haven has sheltered pitches surrounded by lots of green vegetation. There’s running water on site, but things are kept pretty basic so that guests can fully appreciate the sunsets and skies of the Friesland (or enjoy the entertainment on site). When you want to head into the town, Bolsward and Harlingen are 15 minutes’ drive away and Franeker is a 10-minute drive. Each town has plenty of shops, restaurants and cafés. And if you’re looking for something a little closer by, there’s a small food shop five minutes’ drive away, as well as a couple of cafés or restaurants where you can dine in. If the sea isn’t enough water for you, you can also head to an outdoor pool 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

After you’ve finished playing buckets and spades on the sandy strip at Strand Harlingen (15 minutes’ drive), stop off at Makkum Strand (20 minutes), a beach with a big resort and ample opportunities for swimming, surfing, kite surfing or catamarans for sailing in the waves. The family-friendly Aquazoo Friesland (35 minutes) will let you peek at penguins, otters and other animals or party in the playgrounds. Children are also likely to love the lazy boating lake and floating terrace at Kameleondorp (half an hour). If you fancy some learning along the way, you could pick out the planets and stars at the Eise Eisinga Planetarium (10 minutes) or take a deep dive into the history of army bunkers and fortifications at the Casemates Museum (15 minutes) on the coast, a pretty impressive stop to add to your list.
