  • Family-friendly Drenthe site 10 minutes' drive from Beilen
  • Slagharen, Wildlands zoo and Assen TT circuit within half an hour
  • On the banks of a large lake for swimming and fishing
National park walks, zoo days, theme park outings, heart-pumping motor races at the TT circuit: there are many reasons to dally a while in the Drenthe region. Settle at spacious Camping de Bosrand, just outside the little village of Spier, and you’re looking at less than half an hour’s drive to get to all these fab family outings (excellent; who wants to spend half their hols in the car?). No drive at all’s also an option: bikes can be hired on site for the 10-minute pedal to the trails of the Dwingelderveld National Park or pottering off to nearby towns and villages (on a nifty network of bike paths, natch – the Netherlands is, as ever, well sorted on this front). But first to your more immediate surrounds: this is a most family-friendly park, with plenty to keep the nippers amused while you put your feet up and/or ponder your next outings. The playground, trampolines and kid-sized go-karts are popular throughout the year, and come summertime they can get their fill of fresh air with organised antics including wagon rides, pony grooming and campfire baking. Getting a little heated? It’s handy being right by a lake: plunge in for a swim or select a shaded spot to fish for trout (using your own kit or borrowing from the site if you’ve not been able to bring the necessities). If you’re not successful, there are plenty of supplies at the supermarkets in Beilen, 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Pedal off to Dwingelderveld National Park, 10 minutes away, for many, many kilometres of scenic cycle paths through the fens and marshes of Europe’s largest wet moorland area. There are walking trails galore, too – including some super smooth ones for folks roaming with a wheelchair or buggy. The night sky above is often pretty impressive too; learn all about what to look out for on a stargazing evening at the Planetron planetarium in Dwingeloo (15 minutes’ drive). The national park’s something of a haven for butterflies and birds; for beasts a bit bigger you’ll be wanting to wend your way to the Wildlands zoo in Emmen (half an hour’s drive), where all sorts of exotic creatures reside in the four themed zones. Other ideas for family outings nearby are the waterpark and rides at the huge Slagharen theme park (half an hour) and the adrenaline rush of races at the Assen TT circuit (15 minutes). If you’re up for history-themed amblings, head off to Orvelte living museum (20 minutes), the Camp Westerbork memorial centre (20 minutes) or the ancient dolmen in Borger (half an hour).
