If hols full of adventures in the woods, cycling trips and walks under the trees sound just the ticket, bag a stay at Vodatent at Camping Tikvah, a family-friendly site two kilometres from the village of Hooghalen in the Drenthe. The area around Camping Tikvah is a haven for outdoorsy types: there are more than 100 walking and cycling routes in the Drenthe region, suited to all ages and fitness levels – Tikvah is dog-friendly too. To get a sense of the vastness of the galaxy, follow the educational Melkwegpad walking route from Kamp Westerbork to the Westerbork telescope or, if you’d prefer to cool off rather than work up a sweat, plunge below the water at Iberenplas, a swimming lake in the woods, 30 minutes’ cycle from Tikvah. When you fancy a break from exercising, a day of relaxation on site doesn’t have to have the kids' bored: if the playground, games room and trampoline aren’t enough to keep them entertained, go-karts can be rented to give them another way to explore. For eats, grab some grub at the supermarket in Hooghalen and get stuck into prepping your eats: the mobile kitchen in the safari tent means you can do this indoors or out.

Local attractions

Continue your outdoor exploration at Drents-Friese Wold National Park, a 27-minute drive from Vodatent at Camping Tikvah. Trails crisscross through the 6,000-hectare park, full of heathlands, sand dunes and grasslands (but be sure to watch out for adders...). Bring the kids to see the exotic animals at Wildlands Adventure Zoo, make them scream their lungs out on the rides at Drouwenerzand or Slagharen amusement parks, or let them get closer to the stars at Planetron in Dwingeloo, all under 40 minutes’ drive from the site. Grown-ups might prefer a visit to the Maallust Brewery, 25 minutes from Tikvah, for a tour and tasting. You can’t ignore the history of this part of Drenthe: Camping Tikvah is a 10-minute walk from the entrance to Kamp Westerbork, a World War II transit camp where Jewish refugees were held before being transported to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. Guided tours are available of the remembrance centre.
