  • Well-equipped family site four kilometres from Heino town centre
  • Walibi Holland and Julianatoren theme parks within a 45-minute drive
  • Indoor pool, restaurant and lots of playgrounds and kids' activities
Play areas within easy eyeballing distance of the pitches and the restaurant – clearly whoever came up with the layout for Camping Heino knew a thing or two about little details that make all the difference on family hols. And there are plenty more subtle strokes of genius to be seen around this Overijssel site four kilometres from Heino town centre… How about a little train by the name of Herby, who runs around the site in summer scooping up tiddlers and taking them off for games and crafts with like-minded pals? Or an indoor pool that’s got a waterslide and toddler pool to keep the smaller guests happy, plus aqua gym classes and a drinks area for the grownups? Catering options should have pretty much all tastes covered too, even for the pickiest eaters – the restaurant opens for lunch and dinner in high season, with plenty of variety to pick from. Drag the kids away from the adjacent play area and you can put them to work getting their own dinner sorted by baking their own pizza. Outside of main meal times, there are still drinks both hot and chilled to be had, and a snack bar to fend off starvation. But it’s not all about the nippers, is it? Far from it – outside of school hols, the activity focus shifts to things aimed at senior travellers (guided bike rides, pétanque tournaments, museum visits and the like…). And all comers, regardless of age, are welcome to use the various sports facilities for games of football, volleyball and table tennis or hire bikes for local pedalling.

Local attractions

Not content with simply providing plenty for kids to do on site, this is a place that’s also cleverly placed for getting out to lots of family-friendly attractions. Bundle the family in the car for the 20-minute drive to the waterpark and rides at AdventurePark Hellendoorn, or the thrills of Walibi Holland (45 minutes’ drive), home to some of the country’s biggest and wildest rides. Dedicated scream-seekers can strap in for yet more rides at Apeldoorn’s Julianatoren theme park (45 minutes); if it’s time to get the heart rate back to normal, aim for the town’s Apenheul monkey park instead. Don’t have to bow to the demands of the younger generation? There are rather more placid days out to be had walking around Beeldentuin Mariënheem sculpture garden (15 minutes) or Sallandse Heuvelrug nature reserve (25 minutes). Guests might also like to take the 10-minute drive to either arty Kasteel Het Nijenhuis (10 minutes) or the more powerful displays at the American Motorcycle Museum.
