There’s no need to arrive laden like a sherpa at Vodatent at Recreatiepark De Scherpenhof, a family-friendly Gelderland glamping site. In fact, pretty much all you’ll need is your clothes, such is the lengthy list of kit that’s already stashed in the safari tents here. Beds and bed linen? Tick. Dining table and outdoor furniture? Tick. A kitchen with fridge, hob, crockery and a handy pile of utensils? Tick. Kitchen unit on wheels so you can cook alfresco or under cover depending on the clouds? Tick (even though you may have never even noticed you needed this before… you do now, right?). You’ll need to provide the food, of course, wherever you choose to cook – but that’s easily acquired with a 20-minute toddle to Terwolde. If you’d rather avoid any form of food prep, head instead to the site’s restaurant or snack bar (and don’t forget to feed your future self by putting in an order for the next day’s fresh bread). It’s handy that so much is easily sorted here, because that means more time for the important business of leisure. And how many ways there are to do just that: the site’s on the banks of the IJssel river so you might like to start by investigating options such as waterskiing or fishing. Next up, perhaps it’s time to dive into one of the swimming pools (indoor and outdoor – assess the warmth and take your pick). There’s plenty to do away from the water too – tennis courts, a football pitch, a bowling alley, an amusement arcade, an indoor play centre, assorted activities organised by the on-site team… and (thankfully) a spacious sunbathing area for a bit of a rest…

Local attractions

Make a break from all the on-site antics to head out to the Hoge Veluwe National Park (half an hour’s drive) for peaceful pottering among the heath and forest, keeping your eyes peeled for the herds of deer that roam around these parts. Horse riding and hiking are both popular ways to get around, as is cycling (on bikes hired locally for folk travelling light). Not native but always good for some merriment are the monkeys that reside at Apenheul animal park in Apeldoorn (25 minutes’ drive). For more jollity once you’re done there, skip next door to the Koningin Juliana Toren amusement park. Handsome Het Loo Palace is just up the road too, if you’re more in the mood to see pretty things. You’ll likely need a whole day if you’re wending your way to Walibi Holland (40 minutes’ drive), a theme park packed with rollercoasters (including the country’s tallest and fastest), family rides and water rides.
