A Veluwe vacation spot with very little to do to get your digs ready – how very fab is the set-up at Juliette Tentvakanties at Natuurcamping de Rimboe. Bag one of the swish safari tents at this Gelderland glamping site and pretty much everything’s already sorted for you (although you may have to make a bed or two – oh, the hardship…). This peaceful site 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Lunteren is a particularly fine place to settle for fresh air, walks and bike rides: the scenic surrounds are filled with forests, moors and wildflower meadows, and there’s an old sand quarry nearby that’s being turned back into a natural habitat. Lots of well-marked cycle paths run through the area for days of traffic-free pedalling, and guests can hire bikes on site if they’ve not been able to bring their own. Those bikes will also come in handy for jaunts to the public open-air pool in the woods (a family-friendly heated pool and paddling pool five minutes away by bike) or when seeking out nearby activities including fishing and canoe rental. Had enough of pedalling for the day? Set up for games of volleyball, football, badminton, table tennis and pétanque back at base, or give your muscles a rest by lazing in the TV room.

Local attractions

You might not realise this is what your hols have been missing all along, but here it is: a museum dedicated to chickens. The Dutch Poultry Museum (10 minutes’ drive) is a surprisingly fun visit, particularly if you time your trip to coincide with one of the chick handling sessions so you can play with cute fluffballs. Ready for some bigger animals? Try the excellent Burgers’ Zoo (25 minutes) or Ouwehand Zoo (half an hour). And if that’s enough animal action for now, perhaps take the tiddlers for a day at Zeumeren leisure park (25 minutes), for miniature golf, waterskiing and pirate-themed playtime at the Treasure Island play park. If you’re seeking to put something a little more cultural on your schedule, try days out among the art and outdoor sculptures at the Kröller-Müller Museum (half an hour), getting a taste of life in days gone by at the Netherlands Open Air Museum (half an hour) or wandering around the gorgeous gardens at Het Loo Palace (40 minutes).
