General

  • Lakeside site surrounded by orchards and rivers
  • Easy access to Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park
  • Two swimming lakes, giant trampoline, recreation rooms and restaurant

Bet you'd like to settle down here for a spell. And what a sensible decision that would be, for Camping Betuwe is in a Dutch land of cycling and zoos, theme parks and city sightseeing for all your holiday activity needs – and in splendid setting with stacks to do on site.

As you may have figured from those spectacular pics just above, Camping Betuwe is a lakeside site, with pitches by the water and loads of peaceful green space around which to roam. Which means there can be watery hours from dawn to dusk: the leisurely options include two lakes to fish or swim in, and a big sandy beach with a waterfront play area. Off site, Betuwe is near the town of Gelderland town of Kesteren, and under an hour from the lovely old city of Utrect.

Keeping kids happily occupied is the main mission at this kid- and teen-friendly park, where both types can join in with the well-organised recreation programs, bounce around the giant outdoor trampoline, or test their mettle at the pinball machines, arcade games, pool table and air hockey of the games room.

Rather thoughtfully (as you'll know if you've ever tried to keep a reticent teen entertained on a family hol), the owners have also added a separate recreation room where teenagers can hang out together and watch TV, listen to music or play a few rounds of table tennis.

A restaurant and snack bar are to hand to keep all ages nicely fuelled, and a well-stocked shop sells essential groceries as well as fresh bread and newspapers daily.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

  • Liked:

Quiet, not crowded and large pitch. Close to Lienden which has a very good shops to stock up on provisions. BBQs where allowed and friendly staff.

    Disliked:

Limited sanitary facilities which meant that one had to queue for a shower (at least the camp site was quiet!) Using a card key to enter the sanitary block was a bit annoying.

We went on a day trip to Utrecht only to come back and find that the long grass around our camp had been cut. It took over an hour to clean up the mess as the cuttings were spread all over our tent, clean towels on the line and all over our chairs, tables and cooking equipment. Not what you want after a hard day of sight seeing with a young child - not sure why this was necessary!

For the cost of camping WiFi should be free.

Local attractions

Start off first at Ouwehand Zoo, under 10 minutes away near Rhenen on the Laarschenberg hill at the south-eastern tip of the Utrecht Hill Ridge. Next up should be a day at the zoo of Royal Burgers' in Arnhem (35 minutes), one of the largest zoos in the country and home to over 500 species and 10,000 animals on its 45 hectares.

If you're up for being active, hiking, biking and horse riding trails snake around the 6,000 hectares of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, half an hour's drive away; if you're more of a nature spotter, this is the second biggest forest site in the Netherlands so has plenty of species to see including over 100 types of bird. (Much) more of the same, as well as the famed Kröller-Müller art museum, is at the Hoge Veluwe National Park within about 40 minutes' drive.

Ancient Utrect, with Cathedral Tower, museum quarter and lively student vibe, is 50 minutes' drive away.
