Time to unwind? How about a spacious site in a nature reserve, where you can get straight out onto walking and bike trails and explore to your heart’s content before coming home to cool off with a swim? If all that sounds promising, then take a look at Recreatiepark de Paalberg, a Gelderland site surrounded by the forests of the Veluwe. From here you can stroll straight out into nearly a thousand acres of the Ermelosche Heide forest, following hiking trails of various lengths or finding bike trails to take you out through the forest and across the heaths. In fact there are many ways to get a good dose of fresh air around here – both the adventure trails of Klimbos Ermelo and the gentle grazing space of Ermelo sheepfold are within easy walking distance, and the banks of the Veluwerandmeren are about half an hour away by bike for beach time and water-based activities. When you’re not out and about, there are active options on site too, including both indoor and outdoor swimming pools (with a kids’ pool and waterslide for extra fun), a tennis court, a playground and a summer programme of kids’ activities. There’s also a sauna where you can soothe aching muscles after a long walk or bike ride. Barbecues and campfires are both permitted here, and there’s a handy food shop on site where you can pick up many of the bits you’ll need (and a bigger supermarket is 10 minutes’ cycle away in Ermelo). The site also has a snack bar and a restaurant/bar for the times when you’d rather someone else did the cooking.

Electric grass tent or touring caravan pitch

Liked: Dat men op mijn verzoek een staanplaats dicht bij de toiletten en wasruimtes had gegeven. De vriendelijkheid van het personeel, alhoewel dat niet voor iedereen gold. Het warme water uit de kranen, helaas niet te stoppen als je maar weinig nodig hebt in de wasruimte. Het zou toch makkelijker zijn om naast de aanraakknop ook de kraan zelf te laten werken als je maar, zeg, een kopje warm nodig hebt. niet er bezuinigend lijkt me.

Disliked: Ik had bij de reservering gevraagd om een staanplaats zo dicht mogelijk bij de toiletten omdat ik slecht ter been was. Aan dit verzoek was prima voldaan, helaas was deze plek wel veel zand/modder met een kleine groene grasrand eromheen. Ik had bij de reservering al aangekondigd dat wij, mijn zoon en ik, later van 17.00 uur zouden arriveren en onderweg in de buurt van Schiphol heb ik in een telefoongesprek met het secretariaat van de Paalberg bevestigd dat we vermoedelijk rond 18.00 uur zouden aankomen. Bij onze aankomst werd op ons verzoek om de auto bij de caravan te mogen laten staan nogal bits door de dame gereageerd met de woorden dat als ik moeite had met lopen ik maar een andere camping had moeten kiezen. Afgezien van deze minder vriendelijke bejegening bleek men ook niet bereid rekening met mijn wens te houden en moest ik enkele malen helemaal van mijn plek (nr. A34) naar het parkeerterrein aan de voorkant lopen wat mij bijzonder veel moeite kostte. Ik had in dit voor-voorseizoen met zo weinig gasten een wat inschikkelijker houding verwacht. Omdat ik speciaal met het ook op de weersomstandigheden voor deze camping met binnenbad had gekozen en wij ook geen enkel idee hadden tot hoe laat het bad open was kwamen we om 19.30 uur voor een bezoekje. Omdat ik als 86-jarige wat trager met verkleden ben, kwam ik pas bij het zwembad toen mijn zoon me tegemoet trad met de mededeling “pap ik ben er uitgejaagd want het gaat om 20.00 uur dicht”. De schoonmaakploeg die uit allervriendelijkste dames bestond, die helaas geen Nederlands begrepen, heb ik gemeld dat ik me deze gelegenheid na alle moeite niet liet ontnemen en ik heb gewoon een korte tijd in het lekker warme water rond gezwommen. Men was uiteindelijk erg vriendelijk tegen mij en dit keer bracht mijn leeftijd wellicht dit voordeel. Anderzijds is het natuurlijk een kleine moeite om op de deur van het zwembad de badtijden te vermelden. Op de website heb ik die niet kunnen vinden. Overigens ook niet in de informatie in de ”blauwe zak”. Wel vroegen we ons af waar die polsbandjes voor dienden die we daarin aantroffen. Voor een camping met het predicaat koninklijk zouden kritische opmerkingen na die vele jaren en talrijke bezoekers toch niet meer nodig moeten zijn. En tenslotte, ik stuur deze informatie naar een adres waarvan ik hoop dat de ontvanger wel weet hoe e.e.a. bij de leiding van dit overigens mooie park moet belanden. Met vriendelijke groet, J. Local attractions

Getting out for a walk is a great way to get a good dose of fresh air – but if you (or the kids) fancy a different activity, you can wander over to Klimbos Ermelo (five minutes' walk) for adventures on the treetop trails and ziplines. There are also outdoor and indoor playgrounds, laser games and a trampoline park at Boerderij-Pret (10 minutes’ drive). If you like your days out to have a bit of a historical/cultural vibe, nearby attractions like Museum Het Pakhuis (five minutes), Museumboerderij Mariahoeve (10 minutes) and Kasteel Staverden (10 minutes) may well fit the bill. You could also spend the day in Harderwijk (15 minutes), visiting the Foundation City Museum and Marius van Dokkum Museum, or take in the Dutch Baroque architecture and formal gardens of Palace Het Loo (25 minutes). Kids not into such things? Set your sights on a day at Walibi Holland or animal encounters at Apenheul instead (both 25 minutes).

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.

Changes to your holiday

Bookings cannot be amended within 90 day(s) of arrival.
