General
- Stopover or base when travelling between Namibia and South Africa
- Pool, bar, and restaurant serving local meats and a la carte
- Braai packs, lamb portions, ice and braai wood available to buy
Decades' worth of experience in welcoming guests to a secure and comfy place to stay between South Africa and Namibia are the plentiful boxes ticked at Grunau Country Hotel in Namibia's south.
This is a nifty stopover spot if you're travelling between South Africa and Namibia, as the hotel's in the Karas Region halfway between the two, and about an hour and a quarter from the border town of Noordoewer. Getting around is a cinch as well: Grunau's on the junction of the roads from Cape Town, Windhoek, Johannesburg and the Fish River Canyons.
Under new management since 2015, the hotel's had a full facelift to include a pool, renovated toilets and showers, and disabled facilities. It's famed in the region for its restaurant, dishing up top quality local meat including beef, pork, lamb and venison; after fuelling up there, stroll over to the air-conditioned bar for tipples, pool and a bigscreen TV.
As it's Africa, braai evenings are a must too – again easily sorted from here as the hotel sells braai packs, lamb portions, ice and braai wood. A farm shop is 10 minutes' drive away.

Local attractions
Moving on towards the coast after your stay, it's about an hour and a half's drive to the spectacular Fish River Canyon, a huge 160-kilometre ravine making up the biggest canyon in Africa. Most of it is privately owned, but public viewpoints are at Hobas, an hour and 15 minutes' drive from the hotel.
Take the Fish River Canyon trail for along the canyon to hike the 88 kilometres of the Fish River to Ai-Ais, a challenge that should take about five days. Handily, the finishing point of Ai-Ais is famed for its hot springs rich in sulphur and fluoride.
Driving towards South Africa from the hotel, it's an hour and 15 minutes to the Namibia border town of Noordoewer and then the South African town of Vioolsdrif, both on the Orange River.
