What a spectacular site this is. Small, peaceful and award-winning Camping Val d'Or is a riverside site in stunning surroundings on the banks of the Clerve, in a green space of four hectares surrounded by two nature parks: take a look at the site pics to see just how lush is this Luxembourg site. Forests and Ardennes countryside are all around for hikes and bike rides directly from the grounds – in a setting so remote and scenic you may not see another soul on your travels. Around the region, the Ardennes have hundreds of kilometres of trails to tackle either by your solitary self or on a guided tour from the site, quarries for climbing are within a short drive, or you can hire a canoe nearby to paddle along the Clerve. Hiking maps and guides are available to buy on site. This is a prettily-maintained park, divided into different fields and with plenty of trees and hedges for shade and privacy. Two play areas (including one in the water) and a couple of ping pong tables are to hand for the kids, there's a football pitch and a volleyball court, and mountain bike excursions run regularly for teenagers and adults. Snacks, ice cream, tea and coffee are on sale in the cafeteria in high season. For more supplies, the village of Enscherange is a few minutes' walk away.

Local attractions

There's some spectacular walking and cycling to be had nearby and around the Luxembourg Ardennes, along with mountain biking around 16 marked trails, canoeing on the Clerve and Sûre rivers, and fishing in the Upper Sûre Lake, half an hour's drive away. Within 10 minutes' drive, have a heritage day out at the tourist centre and living museum of Robbesscheier, a two and a half-hectare space with activities for kids from toddlers to teens. The centre also includes a theme park with a zoo and has regular events including animal feeding, donkey rides and interactive workshops. More history is at Clervaux (10 minutes), home of a handsome 18th-century cathedral and of Clervaux Castle, dating back to the 12th century. This latter has been rebuilt after being destroyed during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II; if you prefer your history a little more modern, a museum on the 1944 to 45 battle and the Second World War itself is in town. You can get to Luxembourg City easily enough from here too, via a journey of about 90 minutes from the station a kilometre and a half away.
