  • Family-run site two minutes' walk from a traditional Alpine village
  • Centre of the 'three valleys' region and 1.5km above sea level
  • Wellness centre with steam baths, sauna and chromotherapy
Margherita Camping and Resort has been welcoming visitors to this outstanding corner of the Italian Alps since 1971. And splendidly so: its family owners have created a space (almost a kilometre and a half above sea level) that's comfy and in harmony with its surroundings too, adding a wellness centre with steam baths, sauna and chromotherapy, and leisure facilities including a games room and free wifi. The site is a couple of minutes' walk from the quiet village of Gressoney St-Jean, many of whose buildings preserve the authentic Walser traditions of the region. Relaxed restaurants dish up fresh fare for hungry adventurers, taking pride in local recipes and ingredients. Back on site, treat yourself to alfresco eats at the barbecue/picnic spots in summer. The Ayas, Lys and Valsesia Valleys are a highly-prized part of Italy's Val d'Aosta region, a magnet for snowy sports and with stacks to do too in the warmer months. The Alta Valsesia is the highest walking route in Europe; other local paths take you through traditional mountaintop villages, or you can link up with the ancient Via Francigena pilgrim route from Canterbury to Rome. There's also a network of trails for mountain bikes, while the foaming rivers of the Aosta valley await for rafters and canoeists of all levels (and courage).

Local attractions

A mere scenic stroll away from where you sleep, the on-site wellness centre is a treat for body and soul: steam out the stress in the Finnish sauna and the Turkish bath, try bathing in coloured lights and an 'emotional shower' recreating the mists of the rain forest. Margherita, Queen of Savoy liked this spot so much she moved her palace here; it's five minutes' drive away at the foot of the Ranzola hill, all bell towers and domes in its forested setting. A 45-minute drive away is Fort Bard (Forte di Bard), mountaintop stronghold of the Savoy dynasty, all stern on the cliffs like something from a Bond film. The hills and valleys of the Val d'Aosta region are teeming with wildlife and you can see some of the best of it while walking the trails of Mt Avic Wildlife Park (50 minutes): kayak along the river, spotting ibex, marmots and golden eagles. For more structured thrills on branch and stream, Champoluc Adventure Park (an hour and a half) is on hand with treetop walks, zipwires and rafting. Aosta (an hour and 15 minutes) is a tempting day trip too, a city of tasty eats and Roman ruins with a cable car to whisk you from the centre up to the peaks behind.
