Different people like to recharge their batteries in different ways… some like to take rural walks, some love the chance to gorge on amazing art and architecture, others want to focus on plenty of time to rest and enjoy some excellent food. You’ll be well set for any or all of these when you stay at Tuscany Camp, a motorhome site just outside the village of Marginone. It’s easily accessed from the E76, and strategically positioned for walking paths, wineries, cycle trails, olive oil mills and other chilled-out Tuscan pursuits. Halfway between Pisa and Florence and with trains not far away, it’s also a handy base for day trips to some of the world’s great cities. Throw places like Lucca, Vinci and Torre del Lago into the mix as well and you’ve got a truly wonderful list of options to keep you busy for days (or weeks…) on end. However you choose to fill your days, you’ll be staying at a peaceful and green site with barriers for security and well-kept, well-equipped pitches with electric, water and drainage hookups. There’s space for your awning, and your kids and dogs are welcome to join you. Toilets, showers and wifi are all provided to make life easy. Marginone has a handful of shops and places to eat less than a mile away, and there are more options in Altopascio (five minutes’ drive) or over in Lucca (20 minutes).

Local attractions

Explore at your own pace – this area is littered with walking trails, cycle paths and little villages to visit by car. There are lots of wineries, olive oil mills and small farms or family-run restaurants to stop off at along the way, so you can plan your routes or just see what you stumble upon as you explore. You may be trying to escape from urban life, but Tuscan cities are worth making an exception for. Lucca (20 minutes’ drive), Pisa (40 minutes) and Florence (55 minutes) are all packed with wonderful art and architecture – and good public transport connections mean you can visit without the hassle of traffic and parking. It’s worth taking a look at some of the area’s smaller settlements too – places like Vinci and San Miniato (both 35 minutes) are atmospheric places to wander around, or you could head to the coast to see where composer Puccini lived in Torre del Lago (40 minutes). If the kids aren’t into all this, take them to Parco di Pinocchio (15 minutes) or Parco Avventura Sospeso Nel Verde (35 minutes) instead.
