  • 150m from the sea in Maremma
  • Friendly and professional staff
  • Bar-restaurant, takeaway, pool and hot tub
To be on holiday on Tuscany is fab enough. But to be in the green Maremma region – and only 150 metres from the sea… Such is the state of affairs at in Tuscany's south. The Maremma region was once marshland and in post-drained days is filled with high hills and hilltop villages, pine forests, rocky and sandy coast and the Natural Park of Maremma. As it's all lush, it's a vineyard region too: do sample many a local wine as you research souvenirs. In between exploring all this, have days on site in and by the Baia Azzurra Club pool, where sun loungers and parasols are available free of charge for guests' use (we spy siestas). There's also a hot tub to sink into, a volleyball court and a football pitch to get busy at, a playground for busy kids, and a bar-restaurant and takeaway to cover eats. Amenities are covered at the site's two toilet blocks and three laundry areas, all with washing machines and tumble dryers.

Local attractions

The rich Maremma region is famed for its landscapes, its cuisine, its wine, its spas and its medieval towns and traditional fishing villages. The site's local town Castiglione della Pescaia emerged centuries ago around a medieval fortress and big fishery (hence: name) and has been busy ever since, setting up as the first seaside town in Tuscany and now its fourth most visited destination. Head here for the old Etruscan centre of Vetulonia and its museum, busy beach resorts and the Natural Reserve of Diaccia Botrona, a wetland space for spotting birds like flamingos and mallards. The beach is a short walk from Rocchette, a long sandy stretch with Rocchette village at its far end, and an adjoining beach, Roccamare, with a quieter vibe. You could (should) also hike or potter around the Natural Park of Maremma, get to Tufa with its hot waterfalls, sample some wine in Scansano and have townie day trips to the springs of Massa Marittima or the museums and archaeology of Pitigliano. Boats can be hailed nearby to island hop around Elba and Giglio islands. If you need any more tips, the Baia Azzurra Club team reckon they know their local stuff pretty well, so feel free to ask them for suggestions.
