If thoughts of Sicily conjure images of turquoise seas, lots of history and large quantities of food, settle in for your hols at the scenic Ciriga Sicily Glamping, a family- and dog-friendly glampsite on an organic farm on the island’s southern coast, five minutes’ drive from the small Ispicese town of Santa Maria del Focallo. Among sandy hills, and sheltered underneath eucalyptus and ancient carob trees, this is a stunningly pretty spot for luxury stays that’ll keep the whole family entertained – the site owners (the Blanco family) have partnered with local business to help organise guided biking and walking tours, watersports excursions, coastal boat trips and (this being Italy) tastings. Not that leaving site is necessary if a taste of Italy is sought… Guests are treated to welcome drinks on arrival and a breakfast buffet every morning on the Blancos’ veranda, and a small shop on site is stocked with fresh eggs, almonds, local fruit, vegetables and olive oil for solo cooks on the shared barbecue or in private kitchens. Souvenirs can be easily nabbed on site too, as there’s a shop with local crafts, haute-couture clothes, and local food and wine products – makes stocking up on gifts for friends and family at home easy, sí? Anyone not too keen on shopping their hols away can join in with harvests and breadmaking, or toddle along to meet some of the farm’s animal friends.

Local attractions

Make the most of island stays by spending as much time as possible exploring the fab beaches of Sicily. Ciriga beach is a five-minute drive from the site, and the towns of Pozzallo and Marzamemi – both within 20 minutes – each have their own sandy stretches for lengthy explores. If the seaside ceases to fascinate, turn to the urban: the city of Ispica is 15 minutes from base, and is a must-visit for its historic cave houses and burial sites, its archaeological park, its palace and its truly stunning buildings. City wanders can be continued about half an hour away in the UNESCO world heritage city of Noto – with palaces and cathedrals to poke around, and Vespa tours to sign up for – and in Syracuse (50 minutes) where there’s a scenic Old Town, a winery and, of course, shopping. For quieter urban days, return to Pozzallo and Marzamemi – the towns are particularly pretty spots, with palaces and a fortified tower in the first, and a coastal reserve in the second – or opt instead for a day in nature. Vendicari Nature Reserve is 20 minutes from the site, and is a prime destination for snorkelling, hiking and birdwatching, among lots else.
