  • No-frills Sicily camping near Mascali, with stunning views of Etna
  • Volcano hikes direct from the site; Taormina 40 minutes’ drive
  • Dog-friendly pitches with electric hook-ups and showers with hot water
This may well be the closest you’ve camped to a volcano. Yes, the main USP at Fattoria sull’Etna is definitely its extraordinary location on the slopes of Mount Etna, with up-close views of its steaming craters and black lava rocks. But if that’s not quite enough for you, there's also the fact that the site is on the eastern coast of Sicily, 40 minutes’ drive from the gorgeous historic city of Taormina. Set on a working farm, the site is all geared up with electrical connections and water supply for the pitches, and there are showers with plenty of hot water – just what you need for hosing down after adrenaline-filled ventures up the mountain. Dogs are welcome to share in those jaunts too (they certainly won’t miss out on walkies on a holiday here) as long as they get on with the resident canines and don’t chase the cockerel. Pizzerias and trattorias dot the surrounding area so you should never go hungry, but there are food shops in Mascali (20 minutes' drive), should you feel compelled to spark up a barbecue, sit back and watch Etna gently spouting fire after dark.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Clean washroom

Disliked: It was too high in the mountains for us. It was way too difficult to reach the campsite as the road has dangerous blind corners and multiple switchbacks at high elevation. The campsite (farm) was too small for our motorhome of 7 meters. We had to park on a slant and had difficulty getting the motorhome out the next day. It was simply not suitable for us. Also we went back and forth on the road to the campsite multiple times as there was no sign for the campsite. Only a billboard with a chicken on it and a small number 21. We had two GPS systems but it was still difficult to find. A simple sign would have helped. The two larger dogs at the campsite frightened our smaller dog.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Local attractions

There are many ways to see Etna. Hiking is one possibility, so for spectacular views and sunsets over the Mediterranean Sea, join an evening tour up the volcano, which also takes in some of the lava caves. If you are determined to reach the highest craters, hiring a guide is compulsory – treks to the summit start from Rifugio Sapienza (50 minutes’ drive). Prefer to see it without all the hard work? Whizz up almost to the summit on a cable-car ride from Rifugio Sapienza, or take a scenic ride around the volcano’s foothills on the Circumetnea train, joining the route at Giarre (20 minutes). If you can walk away from the spectacle that is Etna, Taormina (40 minutes) is a fantastic destination for a day’s trip. Check out the ruined Ancient Greek theatre (see anything familiar in the background?), admire the fine baroque-era churches and cruise the cafés and smart stores in buzzy Corso Umberto. Sightseeing done, head down to the pocket-sized beach at Isola Bella (35 minutes) for a cooling dip in the Med.
