  • A 15-minute drive or bus ride from central Catania
  • Diving centre, restaurant and range of excursions on site
Legend has it that the mythical Cyclopes once lived along this stretch of coast – and it's fairly easy to understand why the mighty beings would pick such a spot. Even with only one eye, they’d have been able to see that what’s now called the Riviera dei Ciclopi is a stunning part of Sicily. The belligerent Greek giants are long gone now, leaving behind them a most peaceful seaside setting for Camping Jonio, a tree-filled site on a cliff terrace. There are splendid sea views from here, and direct access to a rocky stretch of the coast for fishing and swims in the Ionian Sea (don’t worry about scrambling back out over the rocks if you’ve gone in for a dip – there are steps to aid your graceful god/goddess-like exit). A whole different collection of critters resides along the coast these days – to check them out, head to the on-site diving centre where staff can sort you with days of snorkelling, scuba diving lessons and guided dives. That’s not all for excursions beyond the site's gates, for the folk here organise all sorts of outings on a daily basis in high season, to fave Sicilian attractions including Mount Etna and the Alcantara Gorges. If you'd rather potter locally, it's a cinch to get around on public transport, hailing a bus from the stop a few minutes' walk away, hiring bikes on site or driving to Catania in around 15 minutes. And if you'd rather potter right there, there’s a playground and TV room to keep the bambini busy, plus a bar-restaurant for extended alfresco meals on the spacious terrace.

Electric gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Wir können diesen Campingplatz sehr empfehlen. Sanitären Anlagen sind topp. Ein Glückspilz ist wer einen Stellplatz in erster Reihe bekommt, Sonne vom Aufgang bis in die Nachmittagstunden.

Disliked: At the Restaurant we suggest not to opt for any Fancy food. Pasta dishes are good but other main courses leave quite a lot to be desired.

Electric optional gravel and earth tent pitch (no cars)

Liked: Beach at end of site. Loos / washing up area always clean. Guy in the office let me use phone charger. Secure site.

Disliked: Didn't dislike anything so these are just helpful comments. Parking - felt like a bit of a rip off for extra fee for parking after I'd paid for a pitch. Didn't know the Cafe was open for breakfast till final day - no info on display. Update your plugs to incl USB port cos it was a drag when the continental adaptor didn't fit. Not the campsite fault, but the hotel discos blare away all night and well into the early hours.

Liked: Location. Clean facilities. Staff in restaurant.

Disliked: Crammed in. Maybe we have been spoiled by spacious French/Spanish/ Portuguese campsites and just find in general Italians are used to living cheek by jowl.

Local attractions

A lot of folk have passed this way since the Cyclopes and pals wandered off (although you can still see the rocks they allegedly lobbed into the sea about three kilometres north of the site). The Norman Castle in Aci Castello (10 minutes' drive) is an example of what's been left behind – it was built in the 11th century and now houses the civic museum. The real-life Greeks are responsible for some rather fine sights too: the ancient amphitheatre in Taormina (45 minutes) is one of Sicily’s top sights and still stages shows to this day. Catania (15 minutes) is a good place to hunt for historic bits and bobs, such as the Greco-Roman archaeology park, Baroque cathedral and 18th-century elephant fountain. Existing long before any of these folk came by are Sicily’s natural attractions – the sandy beaches 20 minutes away, the black lava cliffs of Alcantara River Park (50 minutes) and the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna (40 minutes).
