Private beach with direct access to the lake, the jetty, the toilet and the beach bar

  • Scenic site on the southwestern shore of Lake Maggiore
  • Multi-sports field and well-equipped beachfront playground
  • Private lake beach and dedicated dog-friendly area on site
Bordered by the Ticino River and the Ossola mountains, this 17-acre lakeside site in Castelletto sopra Ticino has a good range of water- and land-based activities for all ages and abilities right from the site and within very easy reach. Camping Lido Verbano directly overlooks the southwestern shore of Lake Maggiore, which mirrors a landscape of pine forests and ancient mountains. Set within the Ticino Park, a protected natural landscape, the site is a 20-minute drive from the nearest international airport and right next to lots of shops, bars and good restaurants in the town. Not that you necessarily have to go searching for a bar or restaurant, as the Verbano Beach Bar is open during high season. The Verbano Self Restaurant is also open at varied times and days between mid-March and early October. That'll keep your appetite nicely tended to, for surely sessions at the on-site water park and pool (open during high season only) will keep the whole family active. For cycling and exploring on foot, a scenic path is directly accessible from the park and winds its way around the lakeshore past spectacular views. There's also a private and gently sloping grass and sand beach with a well-equipped playground, which means that the kids can muck about while parents lounge around with peace of mind. A multi-sports field for football and tennis and a beach volleyball court are on site, and boats can be boarded at the site's modern dock. Friendly dogs are very welcome – in fact, they're so welcome that they have a dedicated dog area. Barbecues are allowed, and you can pick up your bits from a shopping mall near the resort.

Electric grass pitch (lake view)

Liked It was end of season so very quiet on the site. The pitch we had was great with a view out over the lake. Nice and quiet. Restaurant and cafe were still open. Used a restaurant next door for both night which was outstanding. Good security. Nice cycling options in both directions from the site. Acceptable families with hot water.

Disliked Check in was very very slow.

Local attractions

On the south side of the Alps, Lake Maggiore straddles the border between Italy and Switzerland; it's Italy's second largest lake and the largest in southern Switzerland, and offers a whole heaps of watersports activities at the schools and centres that lie along the lakeshore, such as canoeing, waterskiing, sailing, yachting, diving and snorkelling. When you're up for a spot of town-based history you can visit one the primary towns on Maggiore's southern shore, Arona, a fast five kilometres away, for strolls around its lakeside promenade, pretty piazzas and old winding streets – from here the views of the lake and the surrounding mountains are utterly smashing. For a day out with the kids, Pombia Safari Park (15 minutes' drive) houses a huge array of animalia, from zebras and camels to rhino, ostriches, amphibians and fish; there's also an amusement park here with classic rides such as log flumes, a pirate ship, a ferris wheel and a go-karting track for fun-fuelled family competition.
