California Camping Village: Enternainment available in high season

General

  • Well-equipped site in a pine forest and next to its own private beach
  • 10 minutes' drive to Montalto di Castro; an hour and a half to Rome
  • Large water park, spa, restaurant and lots of summer activities

A peaceful and ancient pine forest, a splendid sandy beach and… days out in Rome? Si, that’s the rather fab mix that’s on offer at Lazio site California Camping Village, right on the seafront 10 minutes’ drive from Montalto di Castro.

Such an excellent Maremma location does, however, bring up a dilemma from time to time… should you spend your day lounging on the beach (it is private, equipped and right next door, after all), exploring the scenic local area or soaking up all the history, art and culture of Rome (given that it’s easily reachable with a drive of about an hour and a half)?

Or, indeed, should you simply hang about on site and take advantage of all the leisure facilities right on your doorstep? That would be tempting once you’ve clapped eyes on the spacious water park (with slides, water games, hydromassage, a beach-style area and a sun terrace), the spa (with Turkish bath, hot tub and more hydromassage), the tennis courts, the playground and the space for games of beach volleyball, football and basketball… not to mention the various activities from Pilates and aqua gym for the grownups to assorted kids’ club antics for the bambini.

The sensible answer is, of course, to settle here for a lengthy stretch so you can cram it all in. And then you’ll also have time to take in all the entertainment (karaoke, board game nights, musicals at the amphitheatre…) and enjoy plenty of meals at the restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s also a well-stocked shop if you’d rather do your own catering (and you can find time…)

Local attractions

So, to Rome? A drive of around an hour and half will get you over to the Eternal City for strolls through its stunning streets, stopping to gawp at the Colosseum, St Peter’s Basilica, the Trevi Fountain and the Sistine Chapel along the way (and to scoff some gelato – all this being wowed is hot work…)

If that seems a bit far-flung but you’d still like to get out and about, try something a bit more local like a visit to the ruins of Vulci (25 minutes’ drive), a colourful stroll through the Tarot Garden (20 minutes) or a bit of flamingo-spotting in the salt pans of Tarquinia Nature Reserve (35 minutes).

Village-based wanders are often rewarding for a sense of the local area too: Montalto di Castro (10 minutes), Pitigliano (an hour) and Bagnoregio (an hour and 15 minutes) are some of the top picks.
