  • Quiet site near the beaches of the Lazio coast and Rome
  • Half an hour's drive to Rome, Cinecittà World and Lido di Ostia
  • Pool, bar-restaurant and playground; close to buses into Rome
Fancy a Roman holiday? You can explore the Eternal City from this fab site in Lazio and see where the Romans head for a break. Camping Aurelia Club is half an hour's drive from Rome, but you'd need a map to tell you that: the wooded hills and fields sloping down to the sea give no clue as to the ancient capital lying just inland. Knowing how many visitors are headed for the city's monuments and museums, the site team make sure the place you stay is peaceful and calm. There's still plenty to get up to thanks to the outdoor pool and the playground, the restaurant and the bar. If you're self-catering (or saving pennies for a blowout feast in Rome) you can make use of the communal barbecue, picking up supplies at the supermarket two minutes' walk away. However strong the pull of Rome, Lazio's coast has some much-loved spots to seek out, such as the happening beach at Fregene, 15 minutes' drive away, with wide sands and beachfront eateries and bars. Also check out Civitavecchia (half an hour), a busy port bristling with classical sites and monuments, as well as a beach popular with swimmers and watersports types.

Local attractions

Buses depart from stops close to the site towards Rome every 50 minutes and the journey takes roughly the same time; if you're up for the challenge of Roman driving, the car journey is about half an hour. Staying so close, don't feel pressured to 'do' this great city in a day: take in the Colosseum, the Tiber and the Trevi Fountain, take a day off and come back for more. On hot city summer days, the hop-on hop-off boats are a fab cooling way to find your way about, and parks like the Villa Doria Pamphili and the Villa Celimontana are top spots for foot resting and picnic eating. You might end up just as busy on your days off too… Tarquinia, 50 minutes' drive from the site, is an old walled town famed for its Etruscan museum and underground tombs. For more serious hiking head to the Decima Malafede natural park for trails and wild boar spotting, or to the clear waters and wildlife-filled shores of Lake Bracchiano, both half an hour away. If you're more into rollercoasters than Roman ruins, Cinecittà World is also half an hour away: a theme park with thrill rides in a film and telly-slanted setting, while Aquafelix waterpark in Civitavecchia's where you go for slides and flumes and getting wet.
