General

  • Organic farm site 25 minutes’ drive from the seaside city of Trieste
  • Outdoor pool and pick-your-own fruit and veg
  • Shop selling farm produce, regional treats and local wines and honey

All very pleasant indeed. Family-friendly Camping Agrituristico Carso is small, scenic and set most handily between coast and countryside, 25 minutes' drive from Trieste. It's splendidly placed for days
around tiptop historic and natural attractions, as well as idle times around the highly handsome seaside settlements of Santa Croce Mare, Sorgenti di Aurisina and Grignano.

Set on a working organic fruit and veg farm bought by Quadracci-Plesnicar family way back in 1932, the site covers five lush hectares made up of meadows, woodland and organic farm fields, and has a firmly eco-friendly biodynamic operation paying particular attention to saving water across its various crops and gardens. And – how fab – guests are most welcome to pick their own fresh produce for family feasts, or instead procure their fine fruity and veggie specimens from the farm’s shop, in addition to local wines, honey and other tasty regional foodie and drinkie bits and bobs.

Your hosts are hailed consistently by chuffed previous guests for their mighty friendly service and excellent local knowledge: they can point you in the direction of spots such as local natural bathing pools, popular hiking trails and beaut beaches, so be sure to ask them for their favourite spots to find out about well-kept locally loved secrets.

For days on site, a playground is on hand to amuse the littlies, and guests of all ages should enjoy the pool area and wanders or picnics around around the farm’s grassy and shaded grounds. For indoorsy spells, hang out around the communal recreation and relaxation room to avail of the site’s free wifi service, or for a comfy sit down.

The accommodation area is set splendidly among a tall forest of oak and ash for plenty of partial shade from the scorch of the Italian sun; and – a bonus for motorhomers – the site also has a handy motorhome service point.

A barbecue area is on site for alfresco family feasts of grilled and sizzled fodder, and a supermarket is a couple of minutes’ walk away should there be a requirement for any bits the farm’s shop doesn’t stock.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 25/06 and 31/08 (subject to weather conditions).

We liked the green surrounding and quiet place. But unfortunately there are many mosquitos and there is a lot of noise from the train and highway. Kind receipt and nice people who own the campsite.

We are very sorry because you are not completely satisfied.
About the trains and the mosquitos we can't do anything.
The trains can be a problem for sensible people like you are, and this is pity. I hope to accommodate you again!
Kind regards
Aila

Local attractions

The surrounding countryside makes for a spectacularly scenic pedal-powered explore, or an equally pretty amble if you aren’t bringing your own bike. And, rather handily, a bus stop is right in front of the site should one not be faffed with either method of getting about.

Camping Agrituristico Carso is a short drive from the sea too, with the seaport city of Trieste being 25 minutes’ south along the coast, plus several other highly handsome and stoppable seaside settlements – such as Santa Croce Mare, Sorgenti di Aurisina and Grignano – along the way.

Also while journeying into Trieste, you could make another stop to see Grotta Gigante (literally ‘giant cave’): the guided tours here are excellent. (If you’re planning on visiting, be sure to wear comfy shoes and a warm coat because it’s a steep 500 steps either side and subterranean-style chilly inside.)

Trieste is a smashing lesser-known Italian coastal city for urban days away from big tourist crowds. Just across the bay from Venice, the city has many a handsome historic building to goggle, with two tiptop picks being the world’s tallest lighthouse, Vittoria Light on the hill of Gretta, and the cracking seafront fortress of Miramare Castle, which you can reach via a historic tram from Trieste’s centre.

Also lovely is the city’s Piazza Unità d'Italia – and, a top tip, it’s particularly picworthy at night.
