  • Quiet dog-friendly site with a beach and sea views in Pontecagnano
  • A 25-minute drive to Paestum and Salerno; continue to the Amalfi Coast
  • Family atmosphere, with a bar, restaurant and football field on site
Ready to take in the fine sand and azure sea on the south coast of Salerno? Half an hour’s drive from the Amalfi Coast, Camping Lido di Salerno is right next to the sea itself too, so you can slide straight onto the site’s own fine-sand beach whenever you like. If you’re looking for adventures further afield, there are plenty of options too… Camping Lido di Salerno is based in Pontecagnano, which is just 25 minutes’ drive away from Paestum, an ancient Greek city with Greek temple ruins and a tomb. The Amalfi coast is accessible too: those who can’t fit down the narrow 163 state road leading there can catch a ferry from the port in Salerno, 25 minutes’ drive away, or enrol themselves on the site’s organised tours. The dog-friendly site has been designed, built and managed by the same family since 1972, and it’s safe to say that hospitality has remained their passion throughout all three generations. The staff are very competent indeed, and they go by the values of patience, hospitality, smiles (of course) and plenty of availability. And what of the facilities? They're well-kept, with bathrooms and hot showers as well as plenty of parking. Other facilities include a bar, a football field, restaurant and car or bicycle rental, so it's up to you whether you spend your spare time having a kick-around, a glass of red or pedalling along promenades. There’s a family atmosphere on site, but it’s still very quiet. It’s safe too, being completely fenced and guarded.

Liked: The location of this site is ideal. It is adjacent to a quiet sandy beach with lovely views and has a direct bus service to Salerno port and train station from outside the gate. From there you can catch ferries to Amalfi and Positana. The staff are friendly and helpful ( they sent a shuttle out to get us when the last bus on a Sunday, left early leaving us stranded). Pitches are a good size , covered by a kind of green sacking material to create shade and have their own sink units. Grey and black water facilities are easily accessible. We only stayed a couple of days to explore the Amalfi coast, for which it is perfect. I would do the same again on the basis that we can use the toilet in our own camper but wouldn’t want to stay longer

Disliked: Now for the downsides. Unfortunately, the site was rather run down (canopies torn, paint peeling, and sink units propped up on cement blocks or bricks. The toilet and shower facilities were poorly maintained and not cleaned properly, or regularly enough. The restaurant wasn’t open, although there is one just a few minutes walk away, and the bar area has no atmosphere and is rarely used.

Local attractions

There may be no slides in the ocean, but that’s okay, because the Isola Verde Acqua Park (15 minutes’ walk) is within walking distance of the site. That’ll give the kids a good splash when they’re looking for somewhere else to explore besides the sea. If you’re not stopping by Salerno (25 minutes’ drive) just to catch the ferry onto the colourful villages of the Amalfi coast, there’s lots for you to see. Start with Castello di Arechi (25 minutes), a castle overlooking the city, and then descend upon museums, Salerno Cathedral and the terraces of Minerva’s Garden. Further on from Salerno, it won’t be long until you get to the ‘gateway’ to the Amalfi Coast. Vietri sul Mare (half an hour) is splendid indeed, with beaches, picturesque streets and ceramic souvenirs. You may fancy switching up the scenery. With the Parco Regionale Monti Picentini to the northeast of the site and other gorgeous wildlife-rich areas within driving distance, waterfall hunting might be a cool addition to your itinerary. Take note of Cascata Solofrone (45 minutes) and Grotta dello Scalandrone (an hour).
